BYD, a Chinese EV maker, is preparing to introduce its latest product, the Seal U, in the European market in February. The BYD Seal U is an electric SUV and a brother to the Seal electric sedan, which debuted last year. While Germany is home to industry titans such as Volkswagen and, more recently, Tesla, BYD is taking a risk with its Seal U.

BYD Seal U Details

The BYD Seal U, where ‘U’ stands for “Utility,” provides a roomy ride for five passengers. The measurements are 4,785 mm x 1,890 mm x 1668 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,765 mm. In Europe, prospective purchasers can select from two equipment lines: comfort and design. The base Comfort variant costs $45,060, while the premium Design line starts at $48,280.

The Seal U has two battery options: a 71.8 kWh version with a WLTP range of 261 miles and an 87 kWh version with an amazing range of 311 miles. Both models utilize BYD’s cutting-edge ‘blade batteries’ with LFP cell chemistry in an 800-volt arrangement.

While the sedan Seal concentrates on providing a dynamic driving experience, the BYD Seal U promotes mobility, comfort, and ample space. It is equipped with a single permanent magnet synchronous motor that generates 160 kW and 330 Nm of torque and powers only the front axle. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 9.3 seconds and has a top speed of 109 mph.

The charging configuration includes a three-phase 11 kW on-board charger for AC charging as well as a DC fast charging function with a standard charging power of 115 kW (comfort) or 140 kW (design). Charging from 30 to 80 percent takes about 27 minutes in the latter situation. Additionally, the Seal U features V2L (vehicle-to-load) technology, which allows it to charge other devices.

BYD Seal U focuses on practicality rather than speed. It has a spacious trunk capacity of 552 l, which can be expanded to 1,440 l when the rear seats are folded down. It also has wireless charging for mobile phones and four USB outlets to keep even the back passengers satisfied.

Deliveries of the BYD Seal U in Europe are scheduled to begin in February, with customers having the option of six paint colors and two interior color schemes. The vehicle has a six-year warranty, covering up to 93,200 miles. BYD guarantees 70% battery capacity for up to eight years, or 124,000 miles, with an eight-year warranty on the electric motor.
