Public AC Charging Stalls in the U.S. Reach 170,000 Milestone

There are currently more than 170,000 Level 2 Public AC Charging Stalls available nationwide, marking a significant milestone in the development of EV charging infrastructure in the US.

This translates to an average monthly growth of 1,500 new AC charging ports, or almost 15,000 more stalls than at the start of the year. Experts predict that by early 2026, there will be more than 175,000 public AC charging stations overall if current trends continue.

Public AC Charging: 170,000 Ports Across 66,000 Locations

As of October 14, 2025, there were 170,033 public Level 2 AC charging ports (also called stalls) in the United States, encompassing all connector standards, according to data from the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC).

3,120 ports (1.8%) of these are presently out of commission for maintenance, but they should be back online shortly.

Note: Each charging port powers one vehicle at a time, even if the charger has multiple connectors.

An estimated 66,070 public charging stations exist, of which 1,325 (2%) are momentarily closed. However, since several chargers in close proximity are frequently counted as separate locations, this number may be a little inflated.

More than 2,000 new public charging stations have been added in the United States in the last ten months, with an average of 200 new sites added each month.

Top U.S. States for Public AC Charging Stalls

According to the AFDC, these five states lead in the number of Public AC Charging Stalls:

  1. California – 45,350 ports
  2. New York – 15,861 ports
  3. Florida – 9,244 ports
  4. Massachusetts – 8,540 ports
  5. Texas – 7,708 ports

Together, these five states account for over 51% of all Level 2 AC charging ports in the U.S.

On the lower end, Alaska has only 109 ports, followed by North Dakota (123), Wyoming (161), and South Dakota (165).

Top Public AC Charging Networks by Number of Ports

Of all public AC charging ports, five major networks control more than two-thirds (66%) of them, with smaller or non-networked providers operating the remaining 34%.

Here’s a breakdown of the top AC Level 2 networks:

NetworkNumber of PortsMarket Share
ChargePoint72,98942.9%
Blink19,65911.6%
Tesla Destination12,4587.3%
Shell Recharge3,7492.2%
EV Connect3,6142.1%

➡️ Total (Top 5 Networks): 112,469 ports (66.1% of the market)
➡️ Other Networks: 57,564 ports (33.9%)

Since January, ChargePoint has added 3,600 new ports, maintaining its market dominance. But not all networks are growing. Compared to earlier in the year, Shell Recharge has 2,300 fewer ports and Blink has 1,500 fewer. The number of NACS-equipped destinations has been steadily growing, as evidenced by the 1,300 port expansion of Tesla Destination.

Connector Types and Transition to NACS

Nearly all other public AC charging stations in North America still use the SAE J1772 plug, which is still used by about 159,000 ports (93%), while Tesla Destination chargers mainly use NACS connectors.

As the industry moves from the CCS1/J1772 connector to the NACS connector, which is quickly becoming the new standard for light-duty EVs, this will gradually change.

Public AC Charging in Canada

Canada is expanding quickly as well. 367 ports (1.2%) of the 29,661 Level 2 Public AC Charging Stalls were momentarily unavailable as of October 14, 2025.

There are 11,882 public stations in all, though some might be counted twice because of their close proximity.

Together, the United States and Canada now have almost 200,000 public AC charging stations, which is a major advancement in the EV infrastructure of North America.
