BYD SHARK DMO plug-in hybrid pickup has earned a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, the company announced. The result is based on a 2025 assessment by Australasian safety organization ANCAP, with additional evaluations by Euro NCAP. The SHARK is on sale in the U.K. now, priced from £47,295 (about $62,400) including VAT (value-added tax).

How the BYD SHARK scored
According to BYD, the Euro NCAP report notes good protection in the frontal-offset test and in the full-width rigid barrier and side barrier evaluations. Euro NCAP also credited the pickup’s protection of the 6- and 10-year-old child dummies in the side barrier impact, and its child presence detection system, which warns when a child may have been left in the vehicle.
In the Vulnerable Road Users section, the SHARK’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) performed well in reactions to cyclists and showed a good response to motorcyclists, the company said. In Safety Assist, Euro NCAP rated the AEB’s reaction to other vehicles as good and credited the lane-departure support system and the speed assistance system, which can set the speed limiter automatically based on identified local limits.
“We know that the BYD SHARK will be yet another important vehicle in our European range, breaking down further barriers to new-energy vehicle adoption,” Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD, said in the announcement.
BYD says the SHARK is its ninth model to earn a five-star Euro NCAP rating since the brand entered the European passenger-car market in 2022, following models including the DOLPHIN SURF, DOLPHIN, SEAL, SEAL U DM-i and SEALION 7.
Super Hybrid DMO powertrain
The SHARK’s DMO powertrain uses two electric motors: a front motor rated at 228 hp (231 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm), and a rear motor rated at 201 hp (204 PS) and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm). Combined system output is 430 hp (436 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm). BYD quotes 0-62 mph acceleration in 5.7 seconds.
A 32.2 kWh Blade Battery, integrated into the ladder-frame chassis using BYD’s Cell-to-Chassis technology, works with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. According to BYD, combined range on a full charge and a full tank is 419 miles (674 km), and the pickup can drive up to about 56 miles (90 km) on electric power alone. BYD did not specify the test cycle for these figures, which are not EPA ratings.
The double-cab SHARK seats five and includes Vehicle-to-Load capability through two onboard power sockets. Standard equipment listed by BYD includes heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a head-up display, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 50W wireless phone charger and a 360-degree camera. BYD first announced U.K. pricing for the SHARK in July.
