Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX, and 7-seat versions go on sale in the UK.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has expanded its all-electric ID. Buzz lineup with three new variants: a practical 7-seater, a high-performance GTX, and a GTX 7-seater model. These new offerings aim to blend sustainability, performance, and versatility for a wide range of customers, from large families to thrill-seekers.

New Variants of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz

  1. ID. Buzz 7-Seater:
    • Built on a longer wheelbase, the ID. Buzz 7-seater is designed for larger families and those who need extra space for adventures.
    • It is powered by an 86 kWh battery, providing an all-electric range of up to 291 miles (WLTP).
    • The vehicle supports rapid DC charging, allowing it to go from 10-80% charge in just 26 minutes.
    • Pricing: Starts from $78,548 with customer deliveries expected in early Autumn 2024.
  2. ID. Buzz GTX:
    • The ID. Buzz GTX is a more dynamic variant with dual electric motors and 4MOTION four-wheel drive, delivering 340PS.
    • It can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds, offering a sporty driving experience for a people carrier.
    • It has a range of up to 262 miles (WLTP) from its 79 kWh battery.
    • Available in both standard and 7-seat configurations.
    • Pricing: Starts from $88,956 for the standard model and $89,629 for the 7-seater, with deliveries expected in Winter 2024.

Additional Incentives and Features

  • OVO Energy Partnership: In the UK, Volkswagen has partnered with OVO Energy to offer the ‘Charge Anytime’ add-on, which allows ID. Buzz owners to charge their vehicles at home for just $0.09/kWh at any time, enhancing the cost-effectiveness of owning an electric vehicle.

Challenges and Market Comparison

While the new ID. Buzz models present exciting options for EV buyers, they face significant competition in terms of pricing and performance:

  • The base 7-seater ID. Buzz is nearly $19,800 more expensive than the standard Tesla Model Y, which offers a similar range.
  • The ID. Buzz GTX is about $13,000 more expensive than the Tesla Model Y Performance, which has a better range and faster acceleration.

These price differences could impact the popularity of the ID. Buzz compared to its competitors, as they position the ID. Buzz models as more of a premium offering in the electric vehicle market. While the ID. Buzz excels in design, spaciousness, and offers the nostalgic appeal of the classic Volkswagen Bus (Bulli), it may struggle to attract the average buyer due to its higher pricing.
