Audi just brought the A2 back as Audi A2 e-tron. Not the diesel-sipping aluminum oddity from the 2000s — an EV, announced September 7, 2026, with deliveries due by the end of the year.
Funny how these things loop. The original A2 was Audi’s attempt to prove a tiny car could be engineered like a flagship: a hand-built aluminum body, diesel engines tuned for absurd efficiency, the works. It flopped commercially but became a cult favorite anyway. This one’s chasing the same idea — small car, does more with less — just with a battery instead of a fuel tank.
The biggest change is under the skin. No more bespoke aluminum structure. It’s built on VW’s MEB platform, same as the ID.3 and ID.4, which honestly makes sense — expensive, bespoke engineering is part of what sank the original A2’s sales numbers in the first place. It’s about 170 inches long, five doors, seats five, and somehow even slipperier through the air than the old car (0.24 Cd versus 0.25).
Audi A2 e-tron has four power levels are coming: 125, 140, 170, and 240 kW. The top one is the interesting one — 326 hp, rear-wheel drive, 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds, which is quick for a car this size. That trim gets an 84 kWh battery (79 usable) and a claimed 391 miles WLTP, so roughly 4.4 mi/kWh. DC charging peaks at 183 kW, good for a 10-80% charge in about 29 minutes, and it does V2L and V2H, so you can run tools or, in theory, part of your house off it.
Cabin-wise it’s what you’d expect from Audi right now: a 12.8-inch touchscreen, 11.9-inch driver display, optional AR head-up display, heated seats, panoramic roof, three-zone climate, and a full driver-assist stack including night vision and a 360 camera.
The original A2 was arguably too smart for the room it walked into — gorgeous engineering, expensive to build, styling people either loved or couldn’t stand. Audi built about 176,000 and called it quits. This one’s walking into a different kind of crowded market: compact EVs everywhere, including a few wearing Audi’s own badge. At around €51,200 for the top trim, it’s not trying to be cheap. It’s Audi’s second attempt at proving small doesn’t have to mean stripped-down.
