The Mercedes VLE (Van Large Electric) is a full-size luxury MPV from Germany — built on Mercedes’ new MVA platform, targeting executive families, chauffeur services, and buyers who’ve outgrown large SUVs. The Zeekr 009 is a premium Chinese MPV from Geely’s Zeekr brand, aimed at high-net-worth buyers who want near-minibus space without sacrificing interior quality. Both seat six to seven passengers. Both cost serious money. The comparison is timely because Mercedes opened orders for the VLE in April 2026 while Zeekr launched the refreshed 2026 009 in May 2026, putting both vehicles on the market simultaneously for the first time.

Range & Charging
The VLE 400 4MATIC with the 115kWh NMC battery delivers over 700km (435 miles) WLTP. The VLE 300 with the 80kWh LFP battery offers approximately 450–480km. DC charging peaks at 315kW on an 800V system, with AC at 22kW — a meaningful step up from the old EQV’s 11kW AC limit. Mercedes claims 10–80% in roughly 15 minutes at a compatible ultra-fast charger.
The base Zeekr 009 Ultra uses a 108kWh CATL Qilin battery with 740km CLTC range and hits 10–80% in 11.5 minutes. Note that CLTC figures run optimistic — real-world range will be closer to 550–600km in mixed driving. Higher trims upgrade to 900V architecture with dual motors producing 416hp (single) up to 450kW (AWD). On charging speed, the Zeekr 009’s 11.5-minute 10–80% is class-leading for an MPV.
Price, Availability & Market Fit
Mercedes VLE launch trims start at €82,260 for the five-seat version. A lower-priced standard VLE 300 arrives later in 2026 from €70,464. For African buyers, expect grey-market landed costs around $95,000–110,000 USD (approximately ₦145–165 million NGN at current rates), depending on port and clearing fees.
The 2026 Zeekr 009 starts at ¥439,800 (~$64,700 USD) in China. In Malaysia it’s priced from RM310,000, making it more accessible than the VLE for markets where parallel imports from Southeast Asia are easier to source. African grey-market estimates sit around $75,000–85,000 USD (₦115–130 million NGN).
Neither is officially sold in Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa. The Zeekr 009 has the pricing and regional distribution edge for African buyers today.
Ecosystem & Rival Context
Mercedes’ relevant lineup includes the EQV (outgoing, being replaced) and the EQS for buyers who want a sedan rather than a van. On the Zeekr side, the 009 Grand VIP four-seater targets ultra-luxury executive transport, while the Zeekr 001 and 007 serve buyers who want EV performance in a smaller package. Worth considering from outside both brands: the BYD Denza D9 and Xpeng X9, both available through grey-market channels at lower prices. The VLE vs 009 comparison wins because these two sit at similar luxury positioning and price points, making the trade-off more direct.
Pros & Cons
Mercedes VLE: Its WLTP rating is independently verified and trustworthy for African long-distance trips, unlike CLTC numbers which inflate real-world expectations. The 800V 315kW charging is among the fastest for a vehicle this large. Mercedes’ service network, while not present everywhere, is more established in African markets than Zeekr’s. On the downside, European pricing makes grey-market landed costs significantly higher than the Zeekr. It’s also not yet available in right-hand-drive markets.
Zeekr 009: The interior is genuinely exceptional — 7.4 square metres of cabin space, 20 Yamaha speakers, full-grain Nappa leather, and available zero-gravity massage seats in the second row. The China pricing makes it the better value import option. The 11.5-minute 10–80% charge is hard to beat at any price. That said, CLTC range figures require a discount — budget for real-world range roughly 20% below the stated figure. After-sales support in Africa is nearly non-existent without a dedicated importer.
Quick Verdict
Choose the VLE if verified long-range performance and a recognizable brand matter — particularly for executive transport or resale value in formal markets. Choose the Zeekr 009 if cabin luxury and cost-per-feature are the priority, and you’re comfortable with a grey-market purchase. Both are niche imports in Nigeria and East Africa right now. The Zeekr 009 is the more practical choice for African buyers today on price alone. The VLE is the longer-term bet if Mercedes expands its African footprint.
