The BMW iX and Audi Q8 e-tron are both full-size electric SUVs aimed at buyers who want premium cabin space, all-wheel drive, and enough range to stop thinking about range. The iX is BMW’s flagship EV, built on a dedicated electric platform with a futuristic design that polarises opinion. The Q8 e-tron is Audi’s top-end electric SUV, an evolution of the Q8 nameplate that leans into familiarity rather than reinvention. Both target the same buyer: someone spending serious money on a family hauler who doesn’t want to feel like they’ve made a compromise.

On range, the iX xDrive50 returns around 380 miles (WLTP), while the Q8 e-tron 55 quattro comes in at roughly 300–330 miles depending on trim and wheel size. The iX also takes a clear lead at the charger — it supports up to 195 kW DC fast charging, getting from 10–80% in around 35 minutes. The Q8 e-tron tops out at 170 kW, which still isn’t slow, but the gap is real enough to matter on longer trips.
Pricing puts both cars in a similar bracket, but the iX typically starts higher — around £87,000 in the UK and roughly $87,000 in the US for the xDrive50. The Q8 e-tron 55 quattro opens at about £81,000 / $74,000, making it the slightly more accessible entry point into the segment. Both are widely available across European and North American markets, with strong dealer networks and reasonable stock levels. If you’re deciding between them, this page is really about one question: do you want the longer range and faster charging of the iX, or the more conventional interior and lower starting price of the Q8 e-tron?
BMW’s current EV lineup includes the i4, i5, i7, and iX1 — so the iX sits at the top of a growing family with clear positioning. On the rival side, Mercedes EQS SUV and Rivian R1S are natural comparisons: the EQS SUV matches the iX on luxury but trails on driving feel, while the R1S goes further off-road and costs less. Audi’s EV stable includes the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and e-tron GT, with the Q8 e-tron as the flagship SUV. Against rivals, the Jaguar I-Pace is smaller and cheaper but showing its age, and the Volvo EX90 undercuts on price while offering a comparable family-size cabin.
BMW iX The iX’s WLTP range puts it among the longest-range SUVs in the segment without moving up to much larger batteries. Its 195 kW charging capability is one of the faster rates available in a production luxury SUV. The interior design is genuinely different — fewer physical buttons than any BMW before it, which some find liberating and others find frustrating. On the downside, the exterior styling is divisive enough that it actively puts some buyers off before they’ve sat inside. And at this price, the cabin materials in some areas feel less premium than what Audi delivers for similar or less money.
Audi Q8 e-tron The Q8 e-tron has one of the more polished interiors in its class — the MMI system is well laid out and the overall fit and finish is difficult to fault. It’s also the quieter, more settled motorway companion of the two, with strong sound insulation across the range. The lower starting price gives it a practical edge for buyers comparing on-the-road costs. That said, the 300-mile range on the 55 quattro is noticeably short against the iX50, especially after real-world conditions take their toll. The platform itself is a conversion rather than purpose-built, which shows in cargo volume — the Q8 e-tron has no front trunk, and boot space is decent but not class-leading.
Quick Verdict
The iX is the better car on the numbers that matter most for EV ownership — range and charging speed. If you cover long distances regularly, it’s the more practical choice despite costing more. The Q8 e-tron is the easier car to live with day-to-day for buyers who don’t need those extra miles: the interior is better-finished, the driving experience is quieter, and the lower price is real. Neither is obviously wrong. It depends almost entirely on how far you drive.
