The BYD Sealion 08 is a full-size electric SUV from BYD, positioned as the flagship of the brand’s Ocean series alongside the Seal 08 sedan. It sits in the large SUV segment and is offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive electric powertrain, alongside a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant for markets where BYD wants a lower-cost entry point. What makes the Sealion 08 notable is its hardware, not its styling: it’s one of the first full-size SUVs to pair BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery with the brand’s megawatt-level flash-charging system, a combination previously reserved for smaller models.

On the powertrain side, the battery electric version is expected to use a 130.5 kWh LFP pack (unconfirmed, based on pre-launch reporting), built on an 800-volt platform. BYD claims a CLTC range of up to 900 km for the EV, though no WLTP or EPA figures have been published, since the vehicle hasn’t launched outside China yet. Buyers should treat the 900 km figure as a Chinese-cycle number that will read meaningfully lower under WLTP or EPA testing. The dual-motor AWD setup produces up to 480 kW (roughly 640 hp) combined. Charging is where the Sealion 08 stands out: BYD’s flash-charging tech reportedly takes the battery from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes, with onboard AC charging specs not yet confirmed. A plug-in hybrid variant is also expected, using a smaller 45.36 kWh LFP battery for more than 400 km of EV-only CLTC range, paired with a 1.5-liter turbo engine.

Pricing has not been officially confirmed. Industry estimates based on Chinese market reporting place the Sealion 08 around 300,000 yuan, roughly $41,500 USD or €38,000, with China as the launch market and no confirmed timeline for international rollout. This positions it as a vehicle for large families or high-mileage drivers who want SUV space with long range and minimal charging downtime, rather than a budget-focused daily commuter. Within BYD’s own lineup, the Sealion 08 sits above the Sealion 07 and effectively mirrors the size and market role of the Tang L in BYD’s Dynasty series, giving BYD two full-size SUV flagships across its Ocean and Dynasty sub-brands. Against outside rivals, it competes with large Chinese electric SUVs like the Zeekr 9X and the Li Auto L9, both of which target similar buyers with extended-range or large-battery configurations. For a direct spec-and-price comparison, the Zeekr 9X is the closest match, making it the most relevant head-to-head for shoppers cross-shopping this segment.
