The BYD Auto Racco is a battery-electric kei car built exclusively for the Japanese market. Designed as an entry-level urban EV, the Racco follows Japan’s strict kei car regulations with a compact footprint, four-seat layout, and super-tall wagon design. It uses a front-wheel-drive platform and BYD’s Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology.

Unveiled at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, the Racco is significant for two reasons. It is BYD’s first vehicle developed specifically for an overseas market, and it is also the first dedicated pure-electric kei car from a non-Japanese automaker. The model targets Japanese city drivers who want low operating costs, easy parking, and kei-class tax benefits.

BYD Racco Range, Battery, and Charging

The BYD Racco EV is expected to launch with two battery options:

• 20 kWh Blade LFP battery
• WLTC-rated range of 180 km (112 miles)

• 30 kWh Blade LFP battery
• WLTC-rated range of 300 km (186 miles)

Both variants use BYD’s Blade battery chemistry, known for durability and thermal stability. Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor rated at around 20 kW (27 hp), although final production specifications have not yet been officially confirmed by BYD.

DC fast charging is reportedly rated at up to 100 kW, with an estimated 10% to 80% charging time of 15 to 20 minutes. This figure comes from early preview reports and remains unofficial until BYD releases final production data. The onboard AC charging rate has not yet been disclosed.

BYD Racco Price in Japan

The BYD Racco price is expected to start at around ¥2.5 million ($16,340 USD) for the base model. A higher-spec trim is estimated at approximately ¥2.8 million.

At launch, the Racco remains a Japan-exclusive EV with no confirmed export plans for Europe, Africa, or other Asian markets.

Where the BYD Racco Fits in the EV Market

Within the BYD Auto lineup, the Racco sits below the BYD Dolphin, which starts at roughly ¥3.5 million in Japan. It also positions above the globally sold BYD Seagull, a model not currently available in Japan.

The Racco enters a competitive electric kei car segment dominated by Japanese brands. Its main rivals include the Nissan Sakura and the Mitsubishi eK X EV. Among them, the Nissan Sakura stands as the closest competitor due to its similar pricing and WLTC-rated 180 km driving range.

For Japanese buyers comparing affordable city EVs, the BYD Racco offers a lower-cost entry point into electric mobility while challenging long-established domestic kei car manufacturers.
