Hyundai Creta launched electric SUV in India

The Hyundai Creta SUV has been popular in India for quite some time, and it has now gone electric. The Creta EV, priced at slightly over $20,000, aims to make electric mobility more affordable.

Since its premiere in 2015, this tiny SUV has been a huge hit in India. Creta had record sales in 2024, selling 186,919 units, contributing for more than 30% of Hyundai’s total Indian car sales of 605,433. Given the number of units sold, it’s no wonder that the Creta is one of the most popular SUVs in the country.

Hyundai showcased an electric Creta model at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, building on previous success. The Creta EV has a starting price of Rs 17.99 Lakh, or slightly over $20,000, making it an appealing prospect in India’s rapidly increasing EV industry.

The electric Creta is offered in four trim levels: Executive, Smart, Premium, and Excellence. The top-of-the-line Excellence trim costs Rs 23.50 lakh, or nearly $27,200. Although it appears modest by Western standards, the gas-powered Creta starts around $12,800 (Rs 10.99 Lakh), nearly half the price of the EV variant.

There is only one electric motor option: a 126 kW (170 hp) unit that powers the front wheels. Creta can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds because to its powerful engine. No, it will not set any speed records, but it is fast enough for a family SUV.

Hyundai offers the Creta EV in two battery pack sizes: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. Based on Indian driving conditions, these models have a driving range of 242 and 294 miles, respectively.

Hyundai has lofty plans for the Indian EV market, aiming to deliver five new electric vehicles by 2030, including the new Creta EV. To meet the region’s specific mobility needs, the business is even looking into the feasibility of three-wheel electric vehicles.
