Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs Now Eligible for the $7,500 Tax Credit
In a major win for the Korean automakers, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have announced that five of their electric vehicles now qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit in the United States. This marks the first time Hyundai Motor Group has been eligible for the incentive since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) took effect in 2022.
Local Manufacturing Unlocks EV Tax Credit Eligibility
The eligibility comes after Hyundai Motor Group’s massive $7.6 billion investment in its new electric vehicle manufacturing hub, Metaplant America (HMGMA), located in Georgia. Construction was completed in just two years, with production beginning in October 2024.
The first vehicle to roll off the production line was the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, followed by Hyundai’s all-new Ioniq 9, a three-row electric SUV. Both models are now eligible for the $7,500 tax credit.
Meanwhile, Kia’s EV9 and 2025 Kia EV6, manufactured at the company’s West Point, Georgia facility, also qualify. Completing the lineup, the Genesis GV70—built at Hyundai’s Montgomery, Alabama plant—joins the list of eligible models.
Boosting Hyundai Motor Group’s EV Sales in the U.S.
This development is expected to significantly boost Hyundai and Kia’s EV sales across the U.S., one of their most competitive markets. Through November 2024, the companies sold over 112,500 electric vehicles in the U.S. alone.
Along with the $7,500 tax credit, Hyundai is also providing a free NACS adapter to customers, granting access to the Tesla Supercharger network—further enhancing charging convenience and ownership appeal.
Future Uncertainty Around the Federal Tax Credit
Despite the good news, the timing could be crucial. Reports suggest that the incoming Trump administration plans to eliminate the federal EV tax credit, which could end the current incentive program altogether.
For buyers, this might be the perfect time to purchase an EV from Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis and take advantage of the $7,500 tax credit while it’s still available.
