The NIO Firefly is a compact electric hatchback developed under NIO’s new Firefly sub-brand. It targets the entry-level premium EV segment and serves as the brand’s smallest and most affordable electric vehicle. The model uses a five-door hatchback design with a rear-wheel-drive layout, which is less common in this category where most rivals use front-wheel drive. Firefly also becomes the first small EV platform from NIO designed for urban markets and global expansion, including Europe. Its compact footprint, battery swap support, and city-focused design place it directly in the growing urban EV market.

NIO Firefly Battery, Range, and Charging

The NIO Firefly uses a single rear-mounted electric motor paired with a lithium-ion battery pack. Early production models indicate a usable battery capacity of around 42 kWh to 45 kWh, although final specifications differ by region and trim level. Estimated WLTP driving range stands between 330 km and 420 km on a full charge depending on wheel size and configuration. Chinese-market CLTC figures are higher, though WLTP ratings provide a more realistic estimate for everyday driving.

Charging specifications place the Firefly in line with other compact electric hatchbacks. The onboard AC charger supports up to 11 kW charging for home and public AC stations. DC fast charging reaches approximately 100 kW peak charging speed. Under ideal conditions, the battery charges from 10 percent to 80 percent in roughly 30 minutes.

One major feature is compatibility with NIO’s battery swap network. In supported regions, drivers swap depleted batteries for charged units at automated stations instead of waiting for a full recharge. Some charging and range figures remain unconfirmed until official certification finishes in additional markets.

NIO Firefly Price and Market Position

In China, the NIO Firefly price is expected to start between RMB 140,000 and RMB 180,000 depending on battery configuration and subscription options. This converts to roughly €18,000 to €23,000 before local taxes and incentives. European pricing will likely increase due to import costs and regional regulations.

The Firefly fits buyers who need a compact EV for city commuting, short-distance travel, and daily urban driving. It also works well as a second household vehicle because of its smaller size and lower operating costs compared to larger electric SUVs.

Inside the NIO lineup, the Firefly sits below the NIO ET5 sedan and NIO ES6 SUV. It gives the brand a lower-cost entry point while keeping access to NIO software services and battery swap infrastructure.

NIO Firefly vs Rivals

The compact EV segment continues to expand across Europe and Asia as buyers shift toward smaller electric vehicles with lower ownership costs. The Firefly enters a competitive category that already includes models such as the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.2all.

The closest competitor is the BYD Dolphin because both vehicles target similar buyers with comparable dimensions, battery size, and price positioning. The main difference comes from NIO’s battery swap ecosystem, which gives Firefly a distinct advantage in markets where swap stations exist.

Unlike larger premium EVs from NIO, the Firefly focuses on efficiency and practicality rather than high performance. The smaller battery pack reduces cost and weight while still delivering enough driving range for daily commuting and urban use.

NIO Firefly Outlook

The NIO Firefly reflects a broader shift in the EV market toward smaller and more affordable electric vehicles. Compact EV hatchbacks continue gaining demand as cities tighten emissions rules and parking space becomes more limited. By combining compact dimensions, realistic WLTP range, DC fast charging, and battery swap support, the Firefly enters the market as a practical urban electric vehicle rather than a flagship premium model.

If NIO expands its battery swap infrastructure outside China, the Firefly could become one of the few compact EVs with both fast charging and battery replacement capability in the same package.
