Redesigned BYD Dolphin revealed through MIIT filing

The BYD Dolphin is getting a makeover for 2025. The redesigned Dolphin, unveiled on December 9th by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), features slight exterior appearance changes as well as a new, more powerful electric motor.

While the Dolphin’s overall silhouette remains unchanged, sharp eyes will detect changes to the front and rear fascia. The headlights are new, the lower front bumper has been altered, and the rear gets a revamped taillight design with the “BYD” badge replacing the old “Build Your Dreams” inscription. Subtle tweaks to the lower back bumper round off the external update.

The noteworthy element is that the updated Dolphin has grown slightly in comparison to its prior Chinese form. The vehicle now measures 168.5 inches in length, 69.7 inches in width, and 61.8 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 106.3 inches. This results in an additional length of 6.1 inches compared to the existing Chinese model, which is consistent with the European version. It appears that BYD abandoned the notion of two vehicles with the same name but differing sizes.

The most notable development is the introduction of a new, more powerful motor choice. Buyers will now have three options: 70 kW (94 horsepower), 130 kW (174 hp), or 150 kW (201 hp). The new 130 kW motor offers a middle ground alternative. All models will continue to employ BYD’s Blade LFP battery packs, which are renowned for their safety and efficiency.

BYD has not yet provided information on the upgraded Dolphin’s battery capacity or range. The current model includes a 44.928 kWh battery pack with a range of 261 miles in the low-power trim and a 60.48 kWh battery pack with a range of 323 miles in the high-power trim.

The upgraded BYD Dolphin has a number of optional features. The choices include a panoramic sunroof, a suite of radar and camera-based driver aid technologies, a black roof, rear privacy glass, and a variety of wheel designs.
