PROS

  1. Long EV-only range for a PHEV — most daily driving can be done without touching the petrol engine
  2. Strong acceleration for the segment (4.9 sec, ~395 kW)
  3. Long warranty coverage plus a 5-star Euro NCAP/ANCAP rating

CONS

  1. Steering and handling feel vague, with noticeable body lean in corners
  2. Core specs — torque, motor count, screen size — are inconsistent across markets and hard to pin down to one number

Chery’s SHS (Super Hybrid System) sits at the center of the Omoda 9: a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine bolted to two or three electric motors — sources disagree on the exact count — with all-wheel drive. Combined output comes in around 443–449 bhp (roughly 395 kW), and 0–62 mph takes 4.9 seconds. That’s quicker than plenty of cars that only run on gas.

Torque numbers are all over the place depending on the outlet — 516 lb-ft, 650 Nm, 700 Nm, 915 Nm all show up in different reviews. Until Omoda publishes a locked spec sheet per market, none of those figures should be treated as final.

The battery is a 34.46 kWh LFP pack from CATL, rated for 93 miles (145 km WLTP) of electric-only driving. For a PHEV, that’s a lot — longer than plenty of full EVs managed a decade ago. One reviewer who spent a week with the car said she used EV mode for roughly 70% of her trips without ever looking for a charger. Winter will cut into that, probably down toward 70 miles, but that’s true of basically every plug-in on sale, not a specific Omoda problem.

Charging is fine, not fast: 65–70 kW DC takes you from 20–30% up to 80% in about 25–30 minutes, and a 6.6 kW AC connection handles an overnight top-up. Combined range — tank plus battery — gets quoted anywhere from 700 to 1,100 miles depending on market and test cycle, a spread wide enough that an independent real-world test matters more than the press figure.

Inside, the Omoda 9 leans into the “premium for less” pitch: a 24.6-inch curved display, a 14-speaker Sony system with headrest speakers, heated and ventilated seats front and rear, and a 660-liter boot — bigger than most rivals in the class. At 4,775 mm long and 1,932 mm wide, it’s a proper large SUV, sitting closer to a Kia Sorento or Skoda Kodiaq than to anything compact.

Pricing shifts by market. Spain’s launch special ran around €39,900; the UK landed at £44,990–£44,995. Either way, it undercuts premium German rivals like the Audi Q5 or Volvo XC60 while roughly matching a Kia Sportage PHEV on price — without giving up much power or equipment.

There’s also talk of a full battery-electric variant. One report out of Spain describes an “AWD Performance” version with a 92 kWh pack, 800V architecture, and a claimed 480 km WLTP range. That’s a single source, and nothing Omoda has confirmed elsewhere backs it up — worth watching, not worth repeating as fact yet.

What is confirmed: an 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty and a five-star Euro NCAP rating from 2025. Handling reviews are split — What Car and Top Gear both called out vague steering and noticeable body lean in corners — but nobody’s arguing with the straight-line speed or the EV-only range. For someone who wants most of what an EV offers without fully committing to one yet, the Omoda 9 is one of the stronger cases currently on sale.
