  2. The Gen 2 frame supports a payload of up to 240 kg
  3. Running costs estimated up to 70% lower than petrol equivalents

CONS

The Roam Air is an all-electric commuter and commercial motorcycle developed by Roam, a Swedish-Kenyan EV company headquartered in Nairobi. It falls within the urban and rural utility segment, built as a standard-layout two-wheeler with a bench seat for rider and passenger, a rear luggage subframe, and a storage compartment where a conventional fuel tank would sit. It is positioned as the first fully adapted electric motorcycle for the commercial market on the African continent.

The Air runs on dual 3.24 kWh lithium-ion battery packs totalling 6.48 kWh, delivering a range of up to 140–180 km on a full charge depending on configuration. Both battery packs are removable and can be plugged into any standard home outlet to charge, or swapped out at a designated station. A full charge via a standard 220V outlet takes approximately four hours.

Roam prices the single-battery Air at $1,500 and the dual-battery version at $2,050 — putting it within reach of the petrol motorcycle segment it directly competes against. Running costs are estimated at up to 70% lower than a comparable petrol motorcycle. It suits boda boda riders, delivery operators, and commercial fleet owners across East Africa. From Roam’s own lineup, the Roam Rapid — a 90-passenger electric bus with a 384 kWh battery and 360 km range — and the Roam Move, a smaller bus designed for Kenyan commuters, represent the brand’s broader electric transport offering. For buyers considering alternatives, Ampersand and Spiro both operate Africa-focused electric motorcycle programs with battery-swap models. Against a standard 150cc petrol boda boda at similar pricing, the Air undercuts it substantially on per-kilometre running cost, though it trails on top speed and refuel convenience outside swap station networks.
