PROS

  1. Strong 600 km (~373 mi) range per charge
  2. Fast MCS charging: 20–80 % in ~40 minutes
  3. High payload capacity matching diesel trucks
  4. Aerodynamic cab with camera system and auto ride‑height
  5. Driver comfort and smart route optimization tools

CONS

  1. Expected Starting price (~US$ 276,525 / £221,000 / €255,000)
  2. MCS infrastructure still limited in some regions
  3. Heavier battery variants increase cost and weight

The Volvo FH Aero Electric is the Swedish manufacturer’s new flagship battery-electric truck, purpose-built for long-haul operations. It enters the heavy-duty segment as a 6×2 tractor unit (4×2 and 6×4 configurations are also available), using a rear-wheel-drive e-axle that houses two electric motors and a six-speed transmission. What makes it notable is the dedicated e-axle platform, which frees chassis space for a much larger battery installation. That design choice pushes the truck’s range into diesel-matching territory and makes it Volvo’s first electric truck capable of genuine long-distance daily cycles.

Vehicle identity at a glance:

  • Manufacturer: Volvo Trucks

  • Market position: Flagship electric long-haul tractor

  • Body type: Tractor unit (rigid available)

  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive via integrated e-axle

  • Key distinction: First Volvo truck on a dedicated e-axle platform, enabling substantially higher battery capacity

Powertrain and Charging

Two battery configurations are offered. The extended-range model carries eight battery packs with a total installed capacity of 780 kWh (725 kWh usable). On the WLTP cycle, it delivers up to 700 kilometres of range — roughly 435 miles. A standard-range version with six packs (540 kWh total, around 460 kWh usable) is rated at approximately 300 kilometres.

Charging flexibility covers depot, opportunity, and corridor fast charging. AC charging through a 43 kW onboard charger takes around 9.5 hours for a full top-up. DC fast charging at 250 kW completes a full charge in approximately 2.5 hours. The extended-range truck really shines with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS). It supports up to 700 kW, bringing the battery from 20 to 80 percent in about 50 minutes. When using a 350 kW CCS charger, that same 20–80 percent window takes between 65 and 85 minutes. Some early previews mentioned a 40‑minute MCS time, but the final production specification settles on 50 minutes — still fast enough to align with mandatory driver rest breaks.

Charging speed benchmarks (extended-range, 20–80%):

  • 700 kW MCS: ~50 minutes

  • 350 kW CCS: 65–85 minutes

  • 250 kW DC (full charge): ~2.5 hours

  • 43 kW AC (full charge): ~9.5 hours

Pricing, Fleet Fit, and Competitive Landscape

Volvo has set a starting price of roughly €255,000 for the base tractor unit. That equates to around £221,000 or US$276,500, though final on-the-road costs will vary by market and specification. Order books are scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2026, with a phased global rollout beginning the same year.

This truck realistically suits medium to large fleet operators running regional or long-haul hub-to-hub routes. The combination of a 700-kilometre real-world driving envelope and megawatt-speed charging slots neatly into existing duty cycles without demanding unrealistic schedule changes.

Inside Volvo’s own ecosystem, the FH Aero Electric sits between the Volvo FH Electric — a 300-kilometre range truck built for regional work — and the lighter Volvo FM Electric, which handles urban and suburban distribution. It also competes conceptually with the diesel-powered Volvo FH Aero I-Save, giving fleets already familiar with that cab design a direct zero-emission alternative.

Looking outward, two natural rivals appear at a similar price point and segment. The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 offers around 500 kilometres of range from a 621 kWh pack and currently charges at up to 400 kW. The Tesla Semi claims up to 800 kilometres, but production availability remains concentrated in North America. The closest spec-for-spec and price-for-price competitor is the eActros 600. Both are European flagship long-haul electric tractors designed for 44-tonne gross combination weight operations, with comparable cab dimensions and almost identical operational targets.

For a fleet manager evaluating a switch to long-distance zero-emission haulage, the Volvo FH Aero Electric essentially eliminates the range-versus-schedule compromise that held back earlier electric trucks. The e-axle architecture, usable 725 kWh capacity, and megawatt charging support turn it into a practical tool rather than a limited pilot vehicle — something that directly positions it against the established eActros 600 and the long-promised Tesla Semi. As production scales through 2026, the real battle will unfold in total cost of ownership and service infrastructure, but on paper the FH Aero Electric has already closed the gap to its diesel equivalents.
