Xiaomi recall 30,931 SU7 Standard Edition over parking assist glitch

Xiaomi EV, the Chinese tech giant’s automobile branch, has issued its first vehicle recall. The recall applies to 30,931 SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicles manufactured between February 6, 2024 and November 26, 2024.

The recall has been started due to a software flaw that may break the time synchronization of the vehicle’s parking assist system. This, in turn, may impair the system’s capacity to detect static obstructions. As a result of this series of errors, the likelihood of collisions increases. Xiaomi EV admitted receiving 255 complaints about this issue, with events dating back as far as November 14, 2024.

According to the firm, the issue is due to an infrequent glitch in the cloud-based service that supports the parking assist functionality. Following the initial reports, Xiaomi EV implemented preventive measures via the cloud service and added additional protective mechanisms to reduce risk.

To address the issue, Xiaomi EV will offer a free over-the-air software upgrade to all impacted vehicles. This upgrade should alleviate the safety risk caused by the parking assist bug. According to the firm, the recall and OTA upgrade come after two months of thorough testing, validation, and consultation with regulatory authorities.

This recall is a major concern for Xiaomi EV, which formally entered the automotive market on March 30, 2021. On March 28, 2024, the business released its first electric car, the SU7.

The SU7 is available in three versions: Standard, Pro, and Max, with beginning pricing of RMB 215,900 ($29,800), RMB 245,900 ($33,950), and RMB 299,900 ($41,400), respectively. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun revealed on December 31, 2024 that the business produced over 135,000 vehicles in 2024 and plans to supply 300,000 by 2025.
