The Buick Velite 6 is a five-door compact electric wagon built by SAIC-GM for the Chinese market. It sits at the entry level of Buick’s EV lineup — below the newer Ultium-based Electra family — and carries the distinction of being the brand’s first-ever all-electric production model, first launched in 2018. The 2024 model adds a new base trim with a lower-cost LFP battery pack, making it the most affordable Buick currently sold in China.

Powertrain and Charging

The 2024 Velite 6 BEV runs a 50.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 130 kW (174 hp) and 265 Nm of torque. Drive is front-wheel only.

Claimed range: 430 km (267 miles) — CLTC cycle. Real-world range in mixed conditions is likely 360–385 km, as CLTC figures typically run 10–15% above real-world results.

Charging TypeTime
AC slow charge (0–100%)~8.5 hours
DC fast charge (30–80%)~30 minutes

Note: The DC peak output rate in kW is not confirmed in official English-language documentation. The 30-minute fast-charge window is sourced from Chinese spec sheets — treat as unverified until SAIC-GM publishes an official figure.

The LFP chemistry has practical advantages over NMC at this price point: better thermal stability, longer cycle life, and lower degradation risk in hot climates.

Price and Market Context

The 2024 Buick Velite 6 starts at ¥112,800 (approximately $15,500 USD) in China — the lowest price in Buick’s entire Chinese range, including the Excelle sedan.

It is a China-only model. No official right-hand-drive variant exists.

For buyers importing into African markets, the following are rough landed estimates based on current duty and freight costs. These are unconfirmed — verify with a registered importer before purchasing:

  • Nigeria: ₦18,000,000 – ₦22,000,000
  • Kenya: KES 2,500,000 – KES 3,200,000
  • South Africa: ZAR 430,000 – ZAR 550,000

Who it suits: Urban and peri-urban commuters who need a practical, cargo-capable body style and low running costs, and who can source the vehicle through a grey-market or parallel import channel.

Where It Sits in the Market

Within Buick’s China EV range:

  • Below → Buick Electra E4 (Ultium platform, higher spec)
  • Below → Buick Electra E5 (larger SUV, Ultium platform)

External competitors at a similar price and segment:

  • BYD Qin Plus EV (segment leader by volume)
  • Chery eQ7

Closest direct comparison: BYD Qin Plus EV — overlapping range, similar price bracket, and the most direct SEO and buyer comparison target.
