The Yangwang U8 is a full-size luxury off-road SUV built by BYD’s ultra-luxury sub-brand Yangwang, sitting as the brand’s core flagship model. It runs a four-motor AWD layout on BYD’s e⁴ platform, configured as an extended-range EV (EREV) rather than a pure BEV — a 2.0-liter turbo engine works purely as an onboard generator and never drives the wheels directly. What sets the U8 apart in its segment isn’t just the drivetrain: it’s one of the few production SUVs capable of a 360-degree tank turn and a short-duration emergency float mode, both enabled by independent motor control at each wheel plus the DiSus-P Plus hydraulic suspension system.
For 2026, the U8 moved to BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, with a usable capacity of 56.6 kWh. On China’s CLTC cycle, pure-electric range sits at 230 km, with a combined range (electric plus generator) of 1,205 km. No WLTP or EPA figure has been published yet; third-party estimates for a stricter Western test cycle put real-world electric range closer to the low hundreds of kilometers, so treat any non-CLTC number as unconfirmed until BYD publishes one. Charging is the bigger story this generation: BYD’s flash-charging tech takes the pack from roughly 30% to 70% in about 5 minutes and to 97% in around 9 minutes on compatible DC hardware. Official AC onboard charging rate hasn’t been disclosed for this update, so that figure remains unconfirmed. Combined output from the quad-motor setup is 880 kW (1,180 hp), with a claimed 0–100 km/h time of roughly 3.6 seconds.
The 2026 Standard Edition starts at 1,008,000 yuan (about $146,000–$149,000), actually a slight reduction from the prior model year despite the battery and charging upgrade. There’s no confirmed Western pricing yet; a European launch is expected around 2027 with estimates near €200,000 once EU tariffs on Chinese EVs are factored in, but this figure is not official. This is not a vehicle built for everyday commuting or fleet use — it realistically suits buyers seeking a status SUV with genuine off-road capability, comparable to someone cross-shopping a G-Class or a Range Rover on spec sheet alone rather than budget. Within Yangwang’s own lineup, the U8 sits between the U7 performance sedan (its lower-priced sibling) and the longer-wheelbase U8L Dingshi Edition (the brand’s true top trim). Outside the brand, it competes most directly with the Mercedes-Benz G580 (EQG) and the Land Rover Defender on positioning, with the G580 being the closest spec-and-price match for a direct comparison.
