PROS

  1. Three-row, six-seat layout stretched from the standard U8, a first for the Yangwang lineup
  2. Quad-motor AWD delivering 1,180 hp with a 1,160 km combined range on CLTC
  3. Full off-road feature set carried over from the U8, including tank turn and DiSus-P suspension, at flagship trim

CONS

  1. Electric-only range of 200 km CLTC is modest for buyers expecting EV-first daily use
  2. Not yet sold through official channels outside China, limiting access in most global markets

The Yangwang U8L is BYD’s extended-wheelbase version of the Yangwang U8, built under BYD’s flagship luxury sub-brand, Yangwang. It sits at the top of Yangwang’s SUV range, positioned as a full-size flagship rather than an entry or mid-tier model. The U8L is a full-size luxury SUV riding on BYD’s e4 (Yisifang) platform, using a quad-motor all-wheel-drive layout paired with a range-extending combustion engine. What sets it apart from the standard U8 isn’t a new platform but a stretched wheelbase: BYD added roughly 200 mm to the wheelbase and reworked the interior into a three-row, six-seat layout, making it the first Yangwang model built around passenger space rather than pure off-road performance.

Powertrain, Range and Charging

The U8L runs a 55.53 kWh Blade (LFP) battery paired with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that acts purely as a generator, not a direct power source to the wheels. On the CLTC cycle, electric-only range is rated at 200 km, with combined range (battery plus a full fuel tank) reaching 1,160 km. WLTP and EPA figures haven’t been published, since the U8L is currently sold only in China under CLTC testing standards. Treat any WLTP or EPA conversion you see elsewhere as an estimate, not an official rating.

Charging specifics are less consistent across sources. BYD-linked listings put a 30–80% DC charge at around 13.5 to 15 minutes, but the peak DC charging rate itself hasn’t been officially confirmed, with third-party estimates ranging as high as 150 kW. Treat the DC peak figure as unverified until BYD publishes it directly. AC charging is listed at roughly 7 hours 30 minutes for a 15–100% top-up, though the onboard AC charger’s rated kW output also isn’t officially disclosed. Combined output across the four motors reaches 880 kW (1,180 hp) and 1,520 Nm of torque, with a 0–100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds.

Pricing, Buyer Fit and Where It Sits

The Yangwang U8L launched in its home market at 1.28 million RMB, roughly $179,800 USD or €166,000 at current exchange rates. This isn’t a commuter or fleet vehicle. It’s built for buyers who want a chauffeur-capable, off-road-rated flagship SUV with three-row seating and don’t need it to double as a daily EV.

Within BYD’s own lineup, the U8L sits above the standard-wheelbase U8 and below the U9 electric supercar, while the U7 sedan serves as Yangwang’s more accessible entry point. Outside the brand, it lines up against ultra-luxury SUVs like the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 and the Rolls-Royce Cullinan on price and positioning. For a direct spec-and-price comparison, the closest match is the Mercedes-Benz G580 (the electric G-Class), since both pair off-road hardware with an electrified powertrain at a similar price point.
