The Kia EV3 is a compact electric SUV, built on Kia’s E-GMP 400V platform, that slots below the EV5 and EV6 as an entry point into Kia’s dedicated EV lineup. It comes with a single front-mounted motor and front-wheel drive only at launch — no AWD option has been confirmed for the standard EV3. What sets it apart isn’t a spec-sheet superlative; it’s the range and feature set Kia is offering at a size and price point where most rivals cut corners.
Powertrain and Charging
The EV3 ships with two battery options. The Standard Range uses a 58.3 kWh pack (55 kWh usable) rated at up to 436 km (271 miles) WLTP. The Long Range steps up to an 81.4 kWh pack, with Kia quoting up to 600 km (roughly 375 miles) WLTP. Both use the same 150 kW motor, producing 201 hp and 209 lb-ft of torque, and get to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 7.5 seconds. A performance-oriented GT variant has also been shown, rated at 540 km (336 miles) WLTP, though its dual-motor AWD layout has appeared in early reporting without official confirmation — treat that spec as unconfirmed until Kia publishes final figures.
Charging is where the 400V architecture shows its limits. Onboard AC charging tops out at 10.5 kW, and DC fast charging peaks around 128 kW — enough for a 10–80% charge in roughly 30 minutes, but not class-leading against 800V rivals that charge faster. US-market range and charging figures, tested under EPA rather than WLTP, haven’t been published yet, and past experience suggests EPA numbers typically land 10–20% below WLTP.
Pricing, Fit, and Competition
European pricing has EV3 trims starting in the mid-€30,000s. US pricing is still unconfirmed — Kia has signaled a target starting price around $30,000, positioning the EV3 as an affordable entry into its EV range, but nothing is final. The EV3 suits daily commuters and small families who want EV9-style design and usable range without paying EV6 or EV9 money.
Inside Kia’s own lineup, the EV3 sits between the smaller EV2 and the larger EV5/EV6, giving Kia three distinct price tiers within its EV family. Outside the brand, its closest competitors are the Volvo EX30 and the Hyundai Kona Electric, both of which compete on size, price, and urban-focused packaging. For a direct spec-and-price comparison, the Volvo EX30 is the closest match — similar footprint, similar starting price, different trade-offs on cargo space and rear-seat room.
