Mercedes VLE vs Maxus Mifa 9

The Mercedes VLE and Maxus Mifa 9 are both large electric MPVs built for passengers who want more than an SUV can offer — but they target very different buyers. The VLE is Mercedes-Benz’s all-new flagship people carrier, revealed in early 2026 on its purpose-built VAN.EA platform. The Mifa 9 is SAIC Maxus’s Chinese-engineered luxury MPV, already selling in the UK and Europe since 2023. With premium electric MPVs gaining traction in Africa’s grey-import market, this comparison is timely for buyers in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa exploring seven- and eight-seater options.

Range & Charging

The VLE’s 115 kWh battery delivers over 700 km on the WLTP cycle, with the AWD VLE 400 estimated at around 630 km WLTP. Real-world range above 500 km is realistic in moderate conditions. Charging uses an 800V system capable of up to 315 kW DC, with 22 kW AC on-board — Mercedes claims roughly 200 miles can be added in 15 minutes, making 10–80% a sub-20-minute affair at a suitable charger.

The Mifa 9 is less impressive here. Its WLTP range is 440 km (273 miles), but real-world figures are noticeably lower — motorway testing returned closer to 150 miles (240 km) on a full charge. DC fast charging maxes out at 114 kW, and a 10–80% session takes approximately 36 minutes. AC charging is limited to 11 kW.

Price, Availability & Market Fit

The Mercedes VLE starts at approximately €79,000 in Europe, with US pricing estimated around $140,000 — roughly ₦230 million at current parallel market rates. Sales begin in 2026 across Europe, the US, UK, Japan, and South Korea, with no confirmed African market availability yet. Grey import is possible but expensive.

The Mifa 9 starts from £65,290 in the UK — approximately $83,000 or ₦130 million grey-import estimate landed in Nigeria. It is available now across the UK, Europe, and several Asian markets, making it far more accessible for African buyers today. This page helps you decide: if availability and budget are your primary drivers, the Mifa 9 wins by default. If range and ultimate luxury are non-negotiable, the VLE is worth the wait.

Ecosystem & Rival Context

Mercedes buyers in this space should also consider the EQS 580 for a sedan alternative or the EQV if budget is tighter. Maxus buyers can look at the Mifa 7 for a smaller option. Outside both brands, the Kia EV9 (up to 561 km WLTP, ~$55,000) and the BYD Tang EV deserve consideration at a lower price point. That said, neither matches the VLE’s outright range or the Mifa 9’s current grey-import accessibility for African buyers.

Pros & Cons

Mercedes VLE: Its 700+ km WLTP range removes long-distance anxiety that plagues most electric MPVs. The 315 kW charging speed means stops are brief, not half-day events. And the cabin, with an optional 31-inch rear screen and Burmester audio, genuinely rivals business-class travel. On the downside, a $140,000 starting price puts it out of reach for most buyers, and African delivery timelines remain uncertain.

Maxus Mifa 9: It is available now through grey importers and priced at roughly half the VLE’s cost, making it the realistic choice for buyers who want an electric MPV today. The 90 kWh battery and seven-seat layout handle city and inter-city use adequately. However, real-world range below 250 km is a genuine limitation for long highway runs, and resale value and service network support in Africa remain thin.

QUICK VERDICT

Choose the Mercedes VLE if long-range capability and executive-grade comfort are your top priorities and you can wait for a 2026 delivery window. Choose the Maxus Mifa 9 if you need an electric MPV available now at a more manageable cost. The Mifa 9 is the practical, accessible option; the VLE is the better vehicle by nearly every metric — but priced and timed accordingly.
