The Toyota bZ7 is a full-size electric sedan produced by the GAC-Toyota joint venture in China. It went on sale in early 2026 at a starting price of 147,800 yuan (approximately $21,600 / ₦33.5 million), with the top-spec LiDAR trim topping out around 199,800 yuan (~$29,200 / ₦45.3 million). It is confirmed for the Chinese market only.
The bZ7 — formally named Bózhì 7 (铂智7, “Platinum Wisdom”) — is the flagship sedan in Toyota’s bZ (Beyond Zero) electric series. It is built by the GAC-Toyota joint venture on a platform primarily developed by GAC, and sits in the D-segment alongside vehicles like the BYD Han and Xiaomi SU7. The body is a fastback sedan, measuring 5,130 mm long with a 3,020 mm wheelbase. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available on higher grades.
It is the fifth model in the bZ lineup, and the first GAC-Toyota vehicle to run Huawei’s HarmonyOS 5.0 infotainment, Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” smart-home integration, and Momenta’s LiDAR-based driver assistance system. Toyota adopted this localization strategy — sourcing platform, battery, software, and ADAS from Chinese suppliers — to compete directly with domestic brands on price and tech, in the same way Audi restructured its AUDI sub-brand for China.
Two battery options are available, both lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry supplied by CALB:
Important for African readers: these are CLTC figures. China’s test cycle returns results 15–25% higher than WLTP — the standard used in Europe and most African import markets. A realistic real-world estimate for the 88 kWh pack is 530–600 km under moderate conditions. No WLTP or EPA equivalent has been published. The bZ7 has not been certified for any market outside China.
The motor is Huawei’s DriveONE unit, rated at 207 kW (277.5 hp). Toyota quotes a 0–100 km/h time of 7.5 seconds — adequate for everyday driving, though it trails the Xiaomi SU7 Standard (5.28 sec) and XPeng P7 (4.5 sec) at similar price points.
Higher trims support 3C DC fast charging. On the 88 kWh pack, 3C implies a peak DC rate of approximately 264 kW — enough to add around 300 km of CLTC range in 10 minutes. Note: Toyota has not published an official peak DC figure. 264 kW is a derived estimate from the stated C-rating and pack capacity, not a confirmed spec.
AC onboard charging has also not been officially confirmed. Industry sources estimate the onboard charger at 6.6–11 kW; treat this as unconfirmed until Toyota publishes final documentation. A 10–80% DC fast-charge time of under 30 minutes is cited by Toyota-affiliated sources, consistent with other 3C-class vehicles in this segment.
| Trim | China Launch Price | Approx. USD | Approx. NGN* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 600 Pro (base) | 147,800 yuan | ~$21,600 | ~₦33.5M |
| 700 Max | 165,000 yuan | ~$24,100 | ~₦37.4M |
| 710 Ultra LiDAR | 199,800 yuan | ~$29,200 | ~₦45.3M |
*NGN conversions based on mid-2026 parallel market rates. These are introductory launch prices; Toyota has indicated regular pricing will be higher across all trims.
There is no confirmed launch plan for Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa. Any unit arriving via grey-market import from China would attract customs duty, levy, and VAT on top of CIF value. Under Nigeria’s current import duty structure, a grey-import bZ7 would realistically land above ₦55–60 million fully cleared — depending on trim and the exchange rate at time of clearance.
The BYD Han EV is the most direct rival at a comparable spec and price. Both are full-size LFP battery sedans in the 600–710 km CLTC bracket, sold at overlapping prices in China. The Han carries a more mature dealer and fast-charging network across the country. The bZ7 counters with the Huawei HarmonyOS 5.0 cockpit, LiDAR driver assistance on upper trims, dual-chamber air suspension, and the Toyota badge — which still carries weight in corporate and fleet procurement.
For buyers prioritising performance over comfort, the Xiaomi SU7 is worth comparing: it starts at a similar price but reaches 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds and has a sharper technology-forward identity.
