XPeng makes two SUVs worth comparing if you’re buying Chinese EV in 2025: the GX, a sleek coupe-style crossover targeting younger urban drivers who want design alongside range, and the G3, a compact SUV now in its refreshed G3i form, priced for buyers who want XPeng tech without the premium sticker. The GX sits a tier above, but the gap in price and practicality makes this a genuinely contested choice — particularly for grey-market buyers in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa watching the renminbi-to-naira spread.

Range & Charging
The GX offers a CLTC-rated range of around 570–610km depending on trim (unconfirmed for WLTP markets). Real-world estimates sit closer to 420–460km in mixed conditions. It supports 150kW DC fast charging, putting 10–80% at roughly 30–35 minutes. The G3i is rated at 460km NEDC (approximately 350–380km real-world). Its DC charging tops out at 80kW, meaning 10–80% takes around 45–55 minutes — noticeably slower. For daily urban use in Lagos or Nairobi, both are adequate. Long intercity runs favour the GX clearly.
Price, Availability & Market Fit
In China, the G3i starts around ¥139,800 (~$19,500 / ~₦31.5M at current grey-market rates). The GX opens higher, around ¥189,900–¥229,900 (~$26,400–$32,000 / ~₦42.6M–₦51.7M grey-market estimate). Neither has official Nigerian or Kenyan distribution yet — both arrive via grey-market import from China or UAE. If budget is the deciding factor, the G3i wins on paper. If you’re spending ₦40M+ anyway, the GX’s range and build quality justify the gap.
Ecosystem & Rival Context
XPeng’s own G6 sits between these two and is worth factoring in — better specs than the G3i at a moderate premium over it. Outside XPeng, the BYD Atto 3 competes directly with the G3i on price, while the BYD Seal U and MG Marvel R bracket the GX’s space. This XPeng head-to-head still makes sense over those alternatives because both cars share the same brand ecosystem, OTA update cadence, and grey-market supply chain — making the comparison a clean upgrade decision rather than a brand switch.
Pros & Cons
The GX offers a longer real-world range that removes anxiety on longer Nigerian routes where charging infrastructure is sparse. Its coupe roofline attracts attention in markets where EV ownership still signals status. OTA software updates and XPILOT driver assistance come more fully featured at this trim level, which matters for buyers in dense urban traffic. On the downside, the GX’s rear headroom is noticeably tighter than the G3i due to the sloping roofline — a real concern for taller passengers or families. Grey-market pricing also pushes it close to locally distributed rivals that come with warranty support.
The G3i’s lower entry price makes EV ownership accessible without stretching into uncomfortable financing territory. Its upright SUV body offers better rear passenger room and cargo practicality for everyday family use. Replacement parts via Chinese grey channels are more established due to the G3’s longer market history. The slower 80kW charging ceiling, however, becomes a problem as Nigerian fast chargers gradually reach higher outputs. Its older platform also means software features lag behind what XPeng’s newer architecture supports.
Quick Verdict
Choose the GX if real-world range and newer tech matter more than upfront cost — it’s the better road trip car and the stronger long-term buy as charging networks expand. Choose the G3i if you need to keep purchase cost down without giving up the core XPeng experience for city use. The GX is worth the stretch if you’re spending over ₦40M; below that, the G3i is the practical call.
