BYD’s Denza Arrives in Europe: 9-Minute EV Charging, a $134,700 Shooting Brake, and 3,000 Fast Chargers by 2026
BYD has officially launched its luxury EV brand, Denza, in Europe — and it’s not starting small. At a high-profile event at the Palais Garnier in Paris, the Chinese automaker unveiled two premium vehicles and a 1,500-kW flash charging system that can fully charge an EV battery in just nine minutes.

What Is Denza? BYD’s Answer to BMW and Mercedes
Denza is BYD’s premium electric vehicle sub-brand, positioned to compete directly with established European luxury marques like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. The brand plans to sell cars in more than 30 European countries by end of 2026, opening over 150 showrooms — starting in France and Germany.
The Denza Z9GT: A $134,700 EV That Does 0–62 mph in 2.7 Seconds
The headline car is the Denza Z9GT, a low-slung “shooting brake” estate built on BYD’s e3 platform. Key specs:
- Price: From $134,700
- 0–62 mph: 2.7 seconds
- Powertrain options: Pure electric or plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
- Rear-wheel steering for tight European city corners
It’s a direct rival to the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door — but with faster charging than either.

The Denza D9: A Luxury Hybrid MPV With 590-Mile Range
Denza also revealed the D9 DM-i, a large premium hybrid minivan aimed at families. Standout numbers:
- Electric-only range: 130 miles
- Combined hybrid range: 590 miles
- Target buyer: Long-distance family travellers who want zero range anxiety
The Real Story: BYD’s 1,500-kW Flash Charging Technology
The most significant announcement wasn’t a car — it was the charging infrastructure. BYD’s new 1,500-kW flash charging system, powered by its second-generation Blade Battery, delivers:
- 70% charge in 5 minutes
- 100% charge in 9 minutes
For context, most public DC fast chargers in Europe today top out at 150–350 kW. BYD’s system is up to 10× faster than the current mainstream standard.
To back it up, BYD plans to deploy 3,000 flash charging stations across Europe by end of 2026, with 6,000 stations globally.

Daniel Craig Is Denza’s Global Brand Ambassador
To build recognition fast, Denza has signed Daniel Craig — best known as James Bond — as its global brand ambassador. The move is a clear signal that BYD wants Denza perceived as aspirational and premium, not just affordable Chinese tech.
Can Denza Compete in Europe’s Luxury EV Market?
European consumers have been slow to adopt Chinese EV brands, partly due to unfamiliarity and partly due to charging anxiety. Denza is targeting both pain points directly: a recognisable face, premium positioning, and charging speeds that beat almost every rival on the market.
Whether nine-minute charging is enough to pull buyers away from century-old European brands remains to be seen — but it’s a compelling opening move.
