A heavily camouflaged prototype believed to be the all-new 2026 BYD Dolphin has been spotted testing on public roads in China. The sighting hints at major upgrades for BYD’s best-selling compact electric hatchback.
The current BYD Dolphin continues to dominate China’s compact EV market, selling 21,888 units in September 2025 alone. The next-generation model looks set for a complete mechanical overhaul with better range, new tech, and improved performance.

Key Mechanical Upgrades
According to Chinese automotive sources, the 2026 Dolphin will likely feature:
- CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery technology for better efficiency and safety.
- A revised rear suspension, possibly a four-link or five-link setup.
- A new rear-wheel-drive (RWD) option.
- A front trunk (frunk) for extra storage.
- More powerful motors and an enlarged battery pack for extended range.
- Insiders expect long-range RWD and hybrid variants to launch in Q2 2026.
Range and Battery Performance
Early data suggest that the top variant of the 2026 BYD Dolphin could exceed 520 km CLTC range. It will use BYD’s advanced Blade Battery 2.0, offering 82% capacity retention at –30°C, making it highly durable in cold weather.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the new Dolphin is expected to feature:
- A simplified dashboard with dual-tone seats.
- A large floating touchscreen powered by DiLink 5.0.
- The Qualcomm 8295 chip, enabling a 0.8-second voice response time.
- Optional L2+ driver assistance with Highway NOA (Navigation on Autopilot).
- Exterior Design
The next-gen Dolphin will likely continue BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” design language, showcasing:
- Slimmer LED headlights.
- Smaller front air intakes.
- A refined rear end with full-width taillights.
The dimensions should remain close to the current model:
- Length: 4,280 mm
- Width: 1,770 mm
- Height: 1,570 mm
- Wheelbase: 2,700 mm
Launch and Pricing
The 2026 BYD Dolphin is expected to launch between June and August 2026. Pricing will likely remain between 99,800 and 129,800 yuan (about $14,000–$18,200 USD).
The 2025 Dolphin, introduced earlier this year, offers up to 520 km of range and starts at the same entry price.
