Kia EV9 GT High-Performance Electric SUV Set to Launch in January 2025

Kia is gearing up to launch its latest high-performance electric SUV, the Kia EV9 GT, in January 2025. A recent sneak peek inside the vehicle, showcased by HealerTV, reveals its upgraded interior featuring new sports seats upholstered in suede and other premium materials. While the EV9 GT may not be as aggressive as Hyundai’s N EV series, it promises a dynamic driving experience that’s also practical for daily use.

Kia EV9: The Brand’s First Three-Row Electric SUV

The Kia EV9 is the brand’s first three-row electric SUV, initially launched in Korea in the summer of 2023 and later introduced to the US market in December 2023. The EV9 has already played a key role in Kia’s record-breaking sales in the US, selling 13,874 units through August 2024. Its popularity has been a significant factor in Kia’s growing momentum in the electric vehicle market.

What to Expect from the EV9 GT’s Design and Performance

The Kia EV9 GT is expected to feature design elements from the recently updated EV6, including a more sculpted front and rear that enhance aerodynamics. This high-performance SUV will also share the powerful 576-horsepower dual-motor powertrain with the EV6 GT, Kia’s most powerful vehicle to date. According to Kia’s CEO, this powertrain will propel the substantial EV9 GT from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, offering thrilling acceleration for an SUV of its size.

Pricing and Competition

The Kia EV9 GT is anticipated to be priced above the EV9 GT-Line, which starts at $73,900 in the US. Estimates suggest a price around $80,000, still more affordable than competitors like the 2025 Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, which comes in at a significantly higher price point and has a slightly slower 0 to 62 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

Kia’s Growing Electric Vehicle Sales and Strategic Positioning

Kia is experiencing a surge in sales, setting new records in the US in August 2024, driven by the rising demand for SUVs and electric vehicles, particularly the EV9. The addition of the EV9 has helped boost Kia’s electric vehicle sales by 27% year-over-year. Although the Kia EV6 experienced a dip in sales in August, it is still up 13% year-to-date. This dip coincides with the EV6’s upcoming refresh, which promises a sleeker design and extended range due to a larger, more efficient battery.

The Road Ahead for Kia’s EV Strategy

Kia’s strategic moves, such as the domestic production of the EV9 at its West Point, Georgia plant, position the brand to capture a more substantial share of the electric vehicle market. This is especially true as other US automakers like Ford and GM delay major EV initiatives. With the launch of the EV9 GT on the horizon, Kia is set to further strengthen its momentum in the electric vehicle market, solidifying its position as a key player in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
