PROS
- Optional LiDAR availability at an entry-level price point — rare in the subcompact EV segment
- Dual motor output options (70kW / 90kW) provide flexibility across trim levels
- Stellantis dealer network provides accessible servicing infrastructure in Europe
CONS
- Battery size, WLTP/CLTC range, and charging specs remain unconfirmed — buyers cannot yet evaluate real-world usability
- European production not expected until 2027, meaning broader market availability outside China will lag significantly behind the launch announcement
The Leapmotor A05 is a subcompact, five-door electric hatchback produced by Hangzhou-based Leapmotor — a Chinese EV manufacturer with a 20% Stellantis stake — and positioned as the brand’s most affordable entry-level model to date. It sits in the B-segment subcompact class with a front-motor, front-wheel-drive layout, measuring 4,200mm long, 1,800mm wide, and 1,560mm tall on a 2,605mm wheelbase — dimensions that place it squarely against small hatchbacks in the BYD Dolphin and MG4 price bracket. The A05 is expected to support Leapmotor’s aggressive target of selling one million vehicles in 2026 and is described internally as a key new model launch for the year.
Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing either 70kW or 90kW, paired with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery of currently unconfirmed capacity. Range, AC onboard charging rate, and DC peak charging speed have not been officially published as of this writing — all powertrain figures beyond motor output remain unconfirmed and are sourced from MIIT regulatory filings and analyst previews, not Leapmotor’s official specification sheets. The A05 is also expected to offer an optional LiDAR fitment, a feature uncommon at this price tier. Buyers should treat any range estimates circulating online as speculative until Leapmotor confirms CLTC or WLTP figures at the official reveal.
Leapmotor management confirmed during a March 2026 earnings call that the A05 would reach the market in the summer window of late June to early July, with China as the launch market. Pricing has not been announced, though its positioning below the B05 — which carries a UK retail price of £30,495 — suggests a notably lower entry point for European markets when it arrives, likely in 2027 given planned production at Leapmotor’s Figueruelas factory in Spain from 2027. In China, where the model originates, it is expected to target the highly competitive ¥100,000–¥120,000 bracket, though no official figure has been confirmed. The A05 suits urban commuters and budget-conscious first-time EV buyers who need a practical five-door but cannot justify the premium of a B-segment crossover. Internally, it slots beneath the A10 subcompact SUV and above the compact T03 city car. External competition includes the BYD Dolphin and the Cupra Born, Renault Megane E-Tech, and MG4 EV; its closest direct comparison on spec and expected price is the BYD Dolphin.
