The MG 07 is SAIC Motor’s newest fastback sedan under the MG brand, positioned as a mid-size volume model sitting above the existing petrol-powered MG 7 already sold in markets like Australia and the Middle East. Built on a reported new 800-volt architecture (not yet fully confirmed in official spec sheets), it is offered in both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) form — the first MG model fitted with LiDAR-based driver assistance hardware. The five-door fastback body uses semi-hidden door handles, hidden side air inlets, and a full-width rear light bar. The BEV variant runs rear-wheel drive via a single rear-mounted motor; the PHEV pairs a combustion engine with its own electric drive unit.
Powertrain & Charging
The pure-electric variant uses a 67 kWh battery offering either 610 km or 650 km range on the CLTC cycle, driven by a 176 kW rear-mounted motor supplied by Shanghai Automotive Gearbox Company. The PHEV pairs a 30 kWh battery with an 82 kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 152 kW electric motor, giving roughly 185 km of all-electric range under WLTC testing. CLTC figures typically run 15–20% higher than WLTC/EPA equivalents, so real-world BEV range likely sits closer to 500–550 km on a WLTC-equivalent basis. AC onboard charging rate, DC peak rate, and 10–80% charge time have not been officially disclosed as of this writing — these remain unconfirmed pending MG’s full specification release.
Pricing, Fit & Context
MG has listed the 07 in China’s new energy vehicle purchase tax exemption catalogue, with pricing expected to span roughly 150,000–200,000 yuan ($22,100–$29,500). At approximate current exchange rates, that converts to roughly ₦33M–₦44M in Nigeria, KES 2.85M–3.8M in Kenya, or R398,000–R531,000 in South Africa (estimates only; MG has not confirmed EV distribution in any of these three markets, so African availability would most likely come through grey-market import channels, as with existing MG EV models). The 07 suits a tech-forward urban buyer or premium ride-hailing fleet operator looking for a Tesla-style fastback sedan, rather than a family-first or off-road-capable vehicle.
Within MG’s own lineup, the 07 sits above the petrol MG 7 fastback and alongside the MG 4X electric SUV, teased and announced in the same product cycle. Externally, MG is positioning the 07 against the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal in China’s premium EV sedan segment. For direct spec-and-price comparison purposes, the BYD Seal is the closest match.
