MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV is a compact electric SUV built by MG Motor and positioned as an entry-to-mid-tier offering in the brand’s EV lineup. It’s a five-door crossover sold with a front-wheel-drive layout only. The model has been MG’s best-selling pure-electric nameplate in several markets since its 2022 update, though it’s already being phased out in some regions — New Zealand discontinued the ZS EV in 2025 in favor of the newer MG S5 EV, signaling where the platform is headed globally.

The ZS EV is offered in two battery configurations. The Standard Range pack uses a 51.1 kWh capacity for a WLTP-rated range of 198 miles (roughly 318 km), while the Long Range version steps up to a 72 kWh gross battery (68.3 kWh usable) rated at 273 miles (about 440 km) WLTP combined. Both share a single front-mounted motor producing 176–177 PS and 280 Nm of torque. On the charging side, AC onboard charging tops out at 7 kW across both trims, while DC fast charging is rated at up to 76 kW on official manufacturer figures — though several independent spec databases list the Long Range’s DC peak closer to 92 kW. This discrepancy hasn’t been consistently confirmed across sources, so treat the higher figure as unverified. Using a 100 kW public rapid charger, MG quotes a 10–80% charge time of roughly 36 minutes for Standard Range and 42–43 minutes for Long Range.

UK launch pricing runs from roughly £27,500 for the Standard Range SE trim up to about £31,000 for a Long Range Trophy variant (equivalent to roughly $35,000–$39,000 or €33,000–€36,000, before regional taxes and incentives). The ZS EV realistically suits budget-conscious commuters and small families who want SUV practicality without paying for a premium badge or the fastest charging curve on the market. Within MG’s own range, it sits above the smaller MG4 EV hatchback and below the newer MG S5 EV, which is gradually taking over the compact-SUV slot in several markets. Outside the brand, its closest rivals are the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV — both frequently cited as its direct cross-shop competitors on price and segment.
