Nio ES8 third-generation arrived in China in September 2025, and it’s already outselling everything else in the brand’s lineup — 50,000 units by mid-January 2026, 90,000 by early April. The car explains why easily enough: NIO stretched the ES8 from a mid-large SUV into a genuine full-size one, added a bigger battery and faster charging, and kept the one feature nobody else offers — battery swapping.
Numbers first. The new ES8 rides on NIO’s NT3.0 platform with a 900V electrical architecture. The dual-motor AWD setup puts out 520 kW (707 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, good for a 3.97-second 0–100 km/h run — quick for something that seats up to seven.
Every trim ships with the same 102 kWh battery, rated at 635 km CLTC. NIO says a 120 kWh pack with 5C charging support is coming later in 2026 as a swap-eligible upgrade, meaning current owners could get more range without buying a new car. On the charging side, the 900V architecture supports 5C fast charging (250 km added in five minutes) plus 10–80% in around 12 minutes at a PowerSwap 4.0 station. AC charging tops out at 11 kW — unremarkable, but nobody’s leaning on AC with this car.
The swap network is still the Nio ES8’s real differentiator. NIO now runs over 2,500 Battery Swap Stations across China, and a full swap takes 3–5 minutes. That’s the closest anything in this segment gets to gas-station-style refueling, and it’s the reason range figures matter less here than they do for most competitors.
Pricing in China runs RMB 406,800–446,800 (roughly $55,800–$61,200) for outright purchase across three trims — a 6-seat Executive Luxury, 7-seat Executive Luxury, and 6-seat Executive Signature. Buyers who opt into NIO’s Battery-as-a-Service subscription instead of owning the pack pay from RMB 298,800 (about $41,200) up front, plus a recurring battery rental fee.
Inside, the Nio ES8 leans hard into “living room on wheels” territory: a 48-inch panoramic Skyline display, a 21.4-inch Mini-LED screen mounted in the rear ceiling, zero-gravity seats, a multi-temperature fridge drawer, and 27-speaker Dolby Atmos audio. Cargo space holds up with all seats occupied, too — 777 liters even with six people onboard, split across three separate storage areas. The driver-assist suite (NIO calls it Cedar Aquila Super Sensing) runs on 31 sensors;
The new ES8’s most interesting quality is the combination, not any single spec: full-size dimensions, a genuinely fast charging system, and a swap network nothing else at this price point can match. Whether that matters outside China is really a question about how far NIO builds swap infrastructure elsewhere — and so far, that infrastructure barely exists outside its home market.
