Spiro, Africa’s largest electric mobility and battery swapping company, has launched 1,000 electric bikes in Ogun State, Nigeria — its biggest single-state rollout to date — in a move aimed at lowering transportation costs and cutting carbon emissions as fuel prices continue to squeeze Nigerian households and businesses.
The fleet was inaugurated Saturday at Gateway International Airport by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, signaling strong federal and state government backing for the country’s electric vehicle (EV) sector.

Relief for riders as fuel costs bite
The deployment comes as Nigeria grapples with a sharp rise in petrol prices following the removal of fuel subsidies. Governor Abiodun framed the initiative as a direct response to the economic pressure.
“Today we displayed over 1,000 electric mobility solutions because of our forward approach in energy transition — supporting environmental sustainability and urban transportation while mitigating the impact of the sudden increase in fuel prices,” Abiodun said at the inauguration.
Spiro CEO Kaushik Burman echoed the relief angle, positioning the bikes as a practical tool for everyday Nigerians.
“With rising fuel costs, our electric bikes provide a cost-effective solution for riders, passengers, and businesses,” Burman said. “We are proud to partner with both the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government to deliver eco-friendly mobility that empowers Nigerians to improve their livelihoods while protecting the environment.”
Jobs, lower fares, and less congestion expected
The 1,000-bike deployment is projected to create new employment opportunities, reduce commuter fares, and ease traffic congestion in Ogun State — one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing commercial corridors adjacent to Lagos.
“By reducing transportation expenses, we are helping individuals and businesses save money, enhance productivity, and contribute to a more sustainable future for Nigeria,” Burman added.
Part of a nationwide EV expansion
Saturday’s launch forms part of Spiro’s broader strategy to roll out thousands of electric bikes across Nigeria. The company — which operates battery swapping infrastructure across multiple African markets — has positioned Nigeria as a key growth market as governments across the continent accelerate energy transition policies.
The Ogun State inauguration was attended by senior federal and state officials, industry stakeholders, and business leaders, underscoring the scale of political support behind the initiative.
