The Tesla Model X is a mid-size luxury electric SUV now in its second decade on the market, built for tech-forward families who want performance, range, and seamless software integration. The Rivian R1S is a three-row electric adventure SUV, purpose-built for buyers who want off-road capability without giving up daily comfort. Both seat up to seven, both start above $75,000, and both are now selling in a market crowded with serious competition — making this comparison more relevant than ever in 2025.

The 2025 Tesla Model X offers EPA-estimated range between 314 miles (Plaid) and 329 miles (Standard trim). Real-world range sits comfortably around 280–300 miles depending on speed and load. On a 250kW Tesla Supercharger, the Model X goes from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
The Rivian R1S 2025 range spans from 258 miles on the base Dual Standard to 410 miles with the Max Pack — the longest of any electric SUV currently on sale. DC fast charging tops out at 200kW, with Rivian estimating 140 miles of range recovered in 20 minutes. At home on a 240V Rivian Wall Charger, the R1S adds 25 miles per hour. The standard battery goes from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes; the Max battery takes around 41 minutes.
The 2025 Tesla Model X starts at $84,990 for the standard AWD trim, with the Plaid stepping up to $99,990. At current exchange rates, that’s roughly ₦142M–₦167M. The 2025 Rivian R1S starts at $75,900 (~₦127M), with the Large pack adding $7,000 and the Max pack bringing the total to $89,900.
Neither model is officially sold in Nigeria or most of Africa — both are U.S.-market vehicles available through direct import or grey-market dealers. If you’re buying in Nigeria, factor in 35–45% import duties on top of the USD price. This comparison helps you decide which vehicle is worth the import premium for your specific use case.
Tesla’s lineup around the Model X includes the Model Y (more affordable family SUV) and the upcoming Cybertruck for buyers who want utility. Rivian’s ecosystem includes the R1T pickup, a natural companion if you need a truck bed alongside the SUV.
Outside both brands, the BMW iX and Mercedes EQS SUV compete at similar price points with more traditional luxury finishes. The Lucid Gravity pushes further, offering around 450 miles of range at roughly the same price. Still, neither the iX nor the Lucid matches the Rivian’s off-road ability or Tesla’s charging infrastructure reach.
Tesla Model X 2025 The Supercharger network remains its biggest real-world advantage — over 50,000 stations globally means long road trips require less planning. The Plaid’s tri-motor setup delivers 1,020hp, making it one of the fastest SUVs on the planet, which matters to buyers who want performance without compromise. Its 329-mile EPA range is consistent and predictable across conditions.
On the downside, the interior materials feel less premium than you’d expect at this price, with cabin styling that hasn’t kept pace with newer rivals. The falcon-wing doors are a love-or-hate feature that can be slow and impractical in tight parking — a real-world frustration for daily drivers.
Rivian R1S 2025 The R1S is the only vehicle in this class that is genuinely capable off-road — its air suspension can raise the vehicle to nearly 15 inches of ground clearance, which matters if you drive on unmaintained roads. The Max Pack’s 410-mile range removes range anxiety entirely for most use cases. Rivian’s battery and drivetrain warranty covers eight years or 150,000 miles — more generous than Tesla’s terms, giving long-term peace of mind.
The trade-off is that Rivian’s charging network is still smaller than Tesla’s, and five-year cost-to-own puts it squarely in luxury SUV territory once depreciation, insurance, and financing are factored in. As a newer brand, service access outside the U.S. is also more limited.
Quick Verdict
Choose the Tesla Model X if charging infrastructure, software maturity, and outright performance are your top priorities — it’s the more refined daily driver with a larger global support network. Choose the Rivian R1S if you want greater range, genuine off-road capability, and a more conventional luxury interior. For buyers importing to Nigeria or Africa, the Rivian’s lower starting price gives you more configuration flexibility for the same budget. The decision comes down to this: Tesla owns the road; Rivian owns everything off it.
The Model X has the edge on long trips thanks to Tesla’s larger Supercharger network, which makes charging stops easier to plan. However, the Rivian R1S Max Pack offers up to 410 miles of range, meaning you may need fewer stops to begin with. Both complete 10–80% charges in roughly 30 minutes on DC fast chargers.
Both EVs skip oil changes and have fewer mechanical components than combustion SUVs. The Rivian R1S carries a longer battery warranty (8 years/150,000 miles vs Tesla’s 8 years/150,000 miles for the standard, with broader drivetrain terms), which reduces long-term risk. Tesla’s larger service network gives it a slight edge for accessibility of repairs.
The Rivian R1S is not officially sold in Nigeria or anywhere in Africa. It can be imported as a used or grey-market vehicle, subject to Nigeria’s import duties and NAFDAC/SON regulations. Import costs typically add 35–45% to the U.S. purchase price, so buyers should budget accordingly.
The Rivian R1S is purpose-built for off-road use, with up to 15 inches of ground clearance, adaptive air suspension, and four independent motors in higher trims. The Tesla Model X is tuned primarily for on-road comfort and performance and is not designed for serious off-road driving.
