  1. 25-liter front trunk, uncommon in this segment
  2. Up to 271-mile WLTP range on the larger battery
  3. Optional Harman Kardon audio, massage seats, and V2L capability at a relatively low starting price

CONS

  1. Base 37 kWh variant's real-world range is estimated in the 130–170 mile range, well below its WLTP figure
  2. Priced roughly €3,000 above its own platform-mate (ID.Polo), with availability so far confirmed only for Europe

Volkswagen has revealed the ID.Cross, a subcompact electric SUV positioned as the brand’s most affordable EV to date. Built on the new MEB+ platform, it shares its underpinnings with the ID.Polo hatchback and slots below the ID.4 in VW’s electric lineup. The car is front-wheel drive only, with a single motor across all trims. What makes it notable isn’t styling — it’s the platform: MEB+ is VW’s first architecture built specifically to hit lower price points without cutting battery chemistry options, giving buyers a choice between LFP and NMC cells in the same body.

Powertrain & Charging

The ID.Cross comes with two battery options. The entry pack is a 37 kWh LFP unit rated for a WLTP range of up to 316 km (196 miles), paired with either an 85 kW (114 hp) or 99 kW (133 hp) motor. The larger 52 kWh NMC pack pairs with a 155 kW (208 hp) motor and reaches a WLTP range of up to 436 km (271 miles). AC charging tops out at 11 kW on both variants. DC fast charging peaks at 90 kW on the smaller battery and 105 kW on the larger one. 10–80% charge times of roughly 23 minutes (37 kWh) and 26 minutes (52 kWh) have been reported by outlets covering VW’s technical briefing but haven’t been confirmed in VW’s own press materials, so treat those figures as provisional.

Pricing, Fit & Context

European pricing starts at €27,990 for the base Trend trim, with Life and Style trims priced around €33,930 and €35,930. That places the ID.Cross about €3,000 above the ID.Polo it’s mechanically related to. Realistically, this is a car built for urban and suburban commuters, small families who need SUV-style practicality without SUV-size running costs, and fleet buyers chasing low total cost of ownership. Within VW’s own range, it sits between the ID.Polo (smaller, hatchback body) and the ID.4 (larger, dual-motor AWD available). Its closest external rivals are the Renault 4 E-Tech and the Ford Puma Gen-E, both competing on price and range in the same segment. For direct spec-and-price comparison, the Skoda Epiq is the closest match — same MEB+ platform, near-identical battery options, and a similar launch window.

Bottom Line

The ID.Cross doesn’t reinvent the small electric SUV, but it’s a credible, well-equipped entry that undercuts most rivals on features-per-euro while matching or beating them on range. Buyers cross-shopping the Skoda Epiq or Renault 4 E-Tech should wait for confirmed real-world range and charging data before committing.
