Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has ordered the immediate deployment of 20 luxury electric buses for public transportation in Maiduguri, fixing fares at a subsidised ₦50 per drop as fuel prices continue to rise across Nigeria.
The buses, inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, are part of a wider electric mobility programme that includes 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles — one of the most ambitious green transport rollouts by any Nigerian state government in recent years.

Fleet Details and Routes
The deployment, which commenced April 3, 2025, consists of 17 buses with 49-seat capacity, two 37-seaters, and one 28-seater, now serving major routes across the Maiduguri metropolis and surrounding communities.
All buses are fully air-conditioned, energy-efficient, and capable of covering over 400 kilometres on a single charge — making them among the longest-range electric buses currently in public service in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s Largest EV Charging Terminal
To sustain the initiative, Governor Zulum has commissioned what is described as Nigeria’s largest electric vehicle charging terminal, with the capacity to simultaneously charge up to 50 vehicles — a critical piece of infrastructure for the long-term viability of Borno’s electric transport network.
₦50 Flat Fare: Relief for Commuters
The Borno Express Transport Service has been directed to maintain the ₦50 subsidised fare indefinitely, shielding residents — particularly students, civil servants, traders, and low-income earners — from the knock-on effects of Nigeria’s ongoing fuel subsidy removal and rising pump prices.
Early results show reduced traffic congestion and significantly improved access to affordable public transport in Maiduguri.
“We are not feeling the impact of rising transportation costs — fares remain at fifty naira per drop. We thank Governor Zulum for this gesture,” one commuter told reporters.
The electric bus initiative positions Borno State as a leader in green energy adoption and urban transport modernisation in northern Nigeria, complementing an existing fleet of buses and saloon cars procured under the Zulum administration.
