PROS

  1. Standard God's Eye C ADAS across all trims, plus a 110 L frunk and up to 1,460 L of boot space with rear seats folded
  2. Fast charging from 30% to 80% in 18 minutes at 156 kW is strong for the price bracket.
  3. Competitive starting price for a feature-dense compact electric SUV with modern interior tech.

CONS

  1. Base range of 430 km CLTC may be modest for longer inter-city drives without a charging stop
  2. Primarily a China-market product; global pricing and availability vary significantly by market.

The BYD Sealion 05 EV is a compact five-door, five-seat electric SUV from BYD’s Ocean series. It sits in the affordable mid-size crossover segment, competing against entry-to-mid-level electric SUVs. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,620 mm long and 1,860 mm wide with a 2,770 mm wheelbase — slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y.

The base trim carries a 50 kWh LFP Blade Battery with up to 430 km of CLTC range, while the mid and flagship trims step up to a 60.9 kWh pack delivering up to 520 km. On charging, DC fast charging peaks at 156 kW, bringing the battery from 30% to 80% in around 18 minutes. The updated 2026 model goes further, equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast flash charging technology, with a maximum pure electric range of 630 km.

The Sealion 05 EV starts at around 117,800 yuan ($16,200), with the Smart and Flagship trims reaching up to 137,800 yuan ($19,000). The updated 2026 version is priced between 119,900 yuan and 145,900 yuan. It suits budget-conscious buyers who want a practical family SUV with ADAS tech included at no extra cost. Within BYD’s own lineup, the BYD Atto 3 sits as a slightly older sibling in the same compact SUV class, while the BYD Sealion 7 steps up as a larger, more premium option. Outside BYD, the MG ZS EV and the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro EV are direct rivals in the affordable electric SUV space. Against the Tesla Model Y, the Sealion 05 offers a meaningfully lower entry price — the base Tesla Model Y RWD in China starts at 263,500 yuan, more than double the Sealion 05’s entry price.
