Dongfeng Nammi 06 Arrives in South Africa from R499,000 — the Most Affordable Electric SUV on Sale
South Africa now has its cheapest fully electric SUV. The first units of the Dongfeng Nammi 06 have landed locally, priced from R499,000 — roughly R200,000 less than the next most affordable option in the segment.
That gap is hard to ignore. The Geely E5/EX5, previously the entry point for electric SUVs in the country, starts around R699,000. The Nammi 06 doesn’t just chip away at that — it blows past it.

Two Versions, One Motor
Both the E1 (R499,000) and E3 (R579,000) share a 120kW front-mounted motor with 230Nm of torque. The 0–100km/h sprint takes around 7.8 seconds — respectable for a family-oriented SUV at this price.
Where they differ is battery size and charging speed.
The E1 gets a 44.94kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Dongfeng quotes 401km on the Chinese Light Testing Cycle (CLTC) — the more realistic WLTP figure is 300km. DC fast charging maxes out at 60kW, taking the battery from 30% to 80% in around 30 minutes.
The E3 steps up to a 51.87kWh pack with 471km CLTC / 350km WLTP range. Its DC charging ceiling is a much more competitive 167kW, cutting that same 30–80% charge to roughly 18 minutes. Both models top out at 6.6kW on AC.

What You Get as Standard
This is where the Nammi 06 punches well above its price. Both variants come with:
- 12.8-inch centre infotainment display and 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster
- 6-speaker audio system and 50W wireless charging
- Automatic air conditioning
- Leatherette seats
- 6 airbags including curtain airbags
- Rear-view camera and rear parking sensors
- Hill-start assist, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, and Brake Assist
- Direct tyre pressure monitoring
For families and practical buyers, there’s also a split tailgate, 500 litres of boot space, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats.
The E3 adds a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, heated and ventilated driver seat with memory function, 6-way power adjustment for both front seats, electrically folding heated mirrors, and adjustable ambient lighting that syncs to music.
The E1 rides on 17-inch steel wheels; the E3 gets 18-inch alloy rims.
Five colours are available — black, white, silver, orange, and green — though South African availability may be narrower.

How It Compares to the Competition
Below R500,000, the electric vehicle market in South Africa is thin. Only two highway-capable models currently sit under that threshold: the BYD Dolphin Surf (from R341,900) and the Dongfeng Box (from R459,000). The Nammi 06 E1 sits just above that line — but it’s the first electric SUV to crack anything close to this price point.
It’s also expected to undercut the upcoming iCaur V23, a modular-design SUV targeting younger urban buyers, by around R50,000.
Who Is Dongfeng?
The brand remains largely unknown in South Africa, but it’s no small player. Dongfeng is one of China’s four state-owned automotive giants. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, it sold 528,000 vehicles globally — more than the total number of new cars sold in South Africa during all of 2025.
The Nammi 06 — known as the Vigo in some markets — is its third model locally, joining the Box hatchback and the 007 Premium sedan. Dongfeng currently has four dealers in the country: Boksburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria.
The company has also recently signed a joint venture with Nissan to co-develop the Dongfeng Nissan N7 and Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid for export markets.
Why Timing Matters
Rising petrol and diesel prices have pushed more South African consumers toward EVs than at any point before. Affordable options are slowly appearing — but under R500,000, the segment is still almost empty. The Nammi 06 is the first electric SUV to genuinely change that.
Whether the dealer footprint can keep pace with demand is a different question. Four dealerships nationally is a starting point, not a network — and after-sales support will matter as much as the sticker price for buyers making the jump.
