Hyundai Motor has officially launched its Ioniq electric vehicle brand in China, introducing a China-first strategy built around a dedicated EV ecosystem called “Ioniq Universe.” The announcement was accompanied by the global debut of two new energy concept cars — the Venus Concept and Earth Concept — signaling Hyundai’s most aggressive push yet into the world’s largest EV market.

Beijing Auto Show 2026: First China-Exclusive Ioniq Production Car Coming
At the Beijing Auto Show 2026, Ioniq will unveil its first mass-production vehicle engineered specifically for Chinese consumers. Over the next three years, the brand will introduce a lineup spanning battery electric vehicles (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV), covering mid-to-large SUV and coupe body styles — segments where demand in China is accelerating rapidly.
What Is Ioniq Universe? Hyundai’s China EV Ecosystem Explained
Ioniq Universe is a China-centric product and experience philosophy placing Chinese consumers at the core of everything — symbolically represented as the Sun, with all future Ioniq models and services orbiting as planets. As a direct result of this naming convention, every Ioniq vehicle sold in China will carry the name of a planet in the solar system.
This is more than branding. The framework governs localised technology development, intelligent driving systems, and after-sales services — all tailored exclusively to Chinese market conditions.
Venus Concept: Hyundai’s Sporty EV Coupe for China

The Venus Concept is a performance-leaning electric coupe concept featuring:
- A striking gold exterior with a single-curve integrated silhouette
- A lightweight frame-style roof and transparent spoiler
- Racing-inspired centre-lock forged wheels and “Golden Record”-themed brake discs
- A distinctive V-shaped LED lighting system and floating transparent side mirrors

Inside, crystal-inspired ambient lighting and halo illumination wrap around a driver-focused cockpit. The “Venus Curve” seats blend suede and metallic chrome gold for a premium sporting feel.
Earth Concept: Hyundai’s Rugged Family EV for Chinese Roads
The Earth Concept takes a more practical, family-forward approach, inspired by Earth’s resilience and natural textures:

- Aurora Shield multi-tone body colour with crystal-textured lines
- Gradient lighting system with subtle “H” brand identifiers
- Integrated roof rails and hidden dual-opening doors for everyday usability
- An interior built around the “Little Earth” Air design system — quiet, protective, and comfort-first
- Air-Hug seats with soft air modules designed for all-age passenger comfort

Localised AI Driving and Extended Range Tech
Hyundai is not relying on global platforms alone. For autonomous driving, Ioniq has partnered with Chinese AI firm Momenta to develop a localised self-driving solution trained on complex Chinese road data — a critical differentiator in a market where local automakers like BYD, Huawei-backed AITO, and NIO already offer mature intelligent driving systems.
On range anxiety — one of China’s top EV purchase barriers — Hyundai will deploy extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, combining its internal combustion engine expertise with full electrification to deliver long-distance capability without compromise.
Ioniq’s Track Record: 550,000+ Sales Globally
Since Hyundai introduced its first dedicated eco-platform in 2016, the Ioniq brand has sold over 550,000 units worldwide. Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP pure electric platform, the current global lineup includes the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9 — all of which have earned international recognition for range, design, and charging speed.
The China chapter, Hyundai says, represents a new decade of ambition for the brand.
