The Rivian R2 is a five-seat, mid-size electric SUV that starts at $48,490 for the rear-wheel-drive Standard Long Range trim and rises to $57,990 for the dual-motor Performance Launch Edition. It sits below the full-size R1S in Rivian’s lineup and is the brand’s first model planned for sale outside North America.
The R2 is Rivian’s entry-level SUV — smaller and cheaper than the R1S, larger than the upcoming R3 compact. It has a five-seat, two-row layout and a unibody construction, which is a structural departure from the body-on-frame R1S and R1T. The launch variant is dual-motor all-wheel drive. A single-motor rear-wheel-drive version arrives in early 2027.
What makes it technically distinct from earlier Rivians is the platform. The R2 uses new 4695-format cylindrical cells in a structural battery pack — the cells are physically integrated into the floor rather than mounted in a separate frame. Rivian built this architecture specifically for the R2 and plans to use it across future, lower-cost models.
The dual-motor AWD Performance trim has an EPA-rated range of 335 miles on 21-inch all-season tires. Swap to 20-inch all-terrain tires and that drops to 314 miles — a 21-mile penalty from the knobby tread pattern, not the wheel size itself.
The usable battery capacity is 86.8 kWh per EPA certification documents, versus Rivian’s own stated figure of 87.9 kWh. The difference is minor and likely reflects different testing protocols rather than an error in either number.
On charging: the R2 accepts AC at 11.5 kW (Level 2, 48 amps at 240V) and peaks at 210 kW DC. Rivian states a 10–80% charge time of 29 minutes. That peak figure applies only at low states of charge; the average rate across the 10–80% window works out to roughly 107 kW. The R2 runs on a 400-volt architecture, which is why it charges slower than 800-volt competitors — the Hyundai Ioniq 5 does 10–80% in about 18 minutes on a compatible charger. Rivian’s CEO has said the company prioritized battery energy density over peak charging speed to keep the R2’s price in range. Whether that trade-off is worth it depends on how often a buyer road trips versus charges at home.
The R2 uses a NACS charge port, giving it native access to over 21,500 Tesla Superchargers in the US and Canada with no adapter required. The Standard trim with the smaller battery pack has not had its range or charging specs confirmed yet — those figures are expected closer to its late-2027 launch.
| Trim | Drivetrain | MSRP (USD) | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Launch Edition | Dual-motor AWD | $57,990 | Q2 2026 |
| Premium | Dual-motor AWD | ~$55,000 | Late 2026 |
| Standard Long Range | RWD | $48,490 | Early 2027 |
| Standard (small battery) | RWD | ~$45,000 | Late 2027 |
The R2 targets buyers who want a capable, adventure-ready electric SUV without the R1S price tag — active families, outdoor-oriented households, and dual-income buyers looking for a second vehicle that can also handle weekend trips.
Within Rivian’s own range, it sits between the R3 compact crossover (smaller, cheaper) and the R1S (larger, more capable, significantly more expensive). Its two closest external rivals are the Tesla Model Y Long Range — EPA-rated 357 miles at a comparable US price — and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD, which charges faster but offers less range. For direct spec-versus-price comparison purposes, the Tesla Model Y Performance AWD is the most relevant benchmark: both are dual-motor AWD crossovers in the same segment and price band.
The R2 is not sold officially in Africa. Buyers in Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa would need to access it through grey-market import, with landed costs for the Performance trim likely above ₦90 million depending on exchange rates and clearing fees.
