Later this month, BYD will make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show 2025 with its first all-electric K-Car, which it has officially teased. A preview of the small EV made especially for Japan’s kei car market is provided by the teaser image, which was posted on BYD’s Japanese website.
The BYD K-Car features the traditional box-shaped design that characterizes Japanese kei cars from the side profile. Although it has not yet been confirmed whether the model will be sold in other countries, such as China, it is anticipated to primarily target the domestic Japanese market.

Thanks to its electric platform, BYD’s new electric K-Car looks to have more interior space than other boxy mini EVs. With a long wheelbase, short front end, and few overhangs, the design optimizes cabin space while keeping a small footprint that makes it perfect for city driving.
According to spy images, the BYD K-Car will have sliding rear doors for convenient access without sacrificing the position of the rear wheels. Large windows, a floating roof, and eye-catching ring-shaped LED lights at the front and back are additional features that highlight the design’s emphasis on functionality and visibility.
The new BYD K-Car’s interior features include a digital instrument cluster, a floating central touchscreen, and a three-spoke heated steering wheel. The connected front-seat arrangement adds to the open, contemporary interior feel, and a tiny triangular window on the A-pillar improves visibility.
A 20 kWh BYD Blade Battery is anticipated to be installed under the hood of the lightweight K-Car, giving it an estimated 180 km of range under WLTC conditions. This should be more than adequate for daily urban commuting, which is the main application for kei cars in Japan, when measured using the CLTC standard.

This prototype, according to BYD Auto Japan, is the company’s first design exclusively for overseas markets that satisfies all kei car requirements in Japan. The company claims that the BYD K-Car, which highlights its most recent battery technology and manufacturing know-how, embodies its global mission to “reduce Earth’s temperature by 1°C.”
