The BYD Seal 08 is BYD Auto’s new flagship sedan, sitting at the top of the Ocean Network lineup alongside the Sealion 08 SUV. It’s a full-size executive sedan with a fastback body, offered in both rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive electric configurations, plus a plug-in hybrid DM-i version. What makes the Seal 08 notable isn’t styling, it’s the hardware underneath: this is the first full-size sedan to pair BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery with the brand’s megawatt-level flash charging system, a combination previously limited to smaller models. The car officially launched in China on July 2, 2026.
The top electric trim uses BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 (LFP chemistry) on an 800-volt platform, rated at up to 905 km of range under CLTC, BYD’s official test cycle for the Chinese market. No WLTP or EPA figures have been published yet, since the Seal 08 has not launched outside China, and CLTC numbers typically run higher than what buyers see under WLTP or EPA testing. The plug-in hybrid variant carries a smaller 45.36 kWh battery good for roughly 400 km of pure-electric range, with a combined CLTC rating of 1,660 km once the 1.5-liter engine is factored in. On charging, the headline figure is BYD’s flash-charging claim of adding about 400 km of range in five minutes, with a 10–70% top-up in the same window. Onboard AC charging rate has not been confirmed at the time of writing.
Pricing in China starts at 196,900 yuan, roughly $28,980 USD. At current exchange rates that converts to approximately ₦40.6 million, KES 3.75 million, or ZAR 470,000, though these are direct conversions, not official African retail prices, since BYD has not confirmed a Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa launch and any unit reaching these markets now would come through grey-market import channels. Realistically, this car suits buyers who want flagship EV range and charging tech without paying legacy-luxury prices, think business executives and high-mileage professionals rather than everyday commuters. Within BYD’s own lineup, the Seal 08 sits above the mid-size Seal and Seal 07, positioning it closer to the Han as BYD’s other large sedan. Outside the brand, it lines up against the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model S on price and segment, with the Xiaomi SU7 standing out as the closest spec-for-spec comparison for buyers cross-shopping this category.
