What is the Chevrolet Bolt EUV?

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV (Electric Utility Vehicle) is a small, all-electric crossover from General Motors. Chevrolet positions it as an entry-level to mid-range EV—affordable, practical, and built for daily driving.

It’s a front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicle with five doors and seating for five. Think of it as a compact hatchback raised slightly higher off the ground.

What makes it notable?
When it launched in 2022, the Bolt EUV became the cheapest car in America available with Super Cruise—GM’s hands-free highway driving system. No hype. Just a fact.

Powertrain, Battery, and Range

The Bolt EUV uses a single electric motor on the front axle. Output is 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque—similar to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but with instant response.

  • Battery size (usable): 65 kWh

  • EPA range: 247–252 miles per full charge (depending on model year and tires)

  • Efficiency: Roughly 3.1 miles per kWh

The EPA cycle is the official standard for the US market. Chevrolet does not publish WLTP figures for this model.

Charging Speed: The Honest Truth

This is where the Bolt EUV shows its age.

  • AC (Level 2) charging: 11 kW onboard charger → full charge in about 7 hours

  • DC fast charging peak rate: 55 kW

  • 10% to 80% on DC: Approximately 68 minutes

To put that in perspective: many newer EVs (like the Hyundai Kona Electric or Tesla Model 3) do the same 10–80% charge in 30–40 minutes. The Bolt EUV is slow at DC fast chargers. It’s fine for overnight home charging or occasional road trips, but not ideal for frequent long-distance travel.

These figures are final production specs for 2022–2025 models. No preview or leak data is used here.

Pricing: How Much Does It Cost?

Chevrolet dropped the price multiple times. Here’s where it landed:

  • Starting MSRP (2024 model year): $27,800 plus destination fee

  • Fully loaded Premier trim: ~$38,500

For context: the original launch price in 2022 was $33,500. The reductions made the Bolt EUV one of the cheapest new EVs in the United States.

Regional note: The Bolt EUV was never officially sold in Europe or Asia-Pacific markets. This guide applies to North America.

Who Is the Bolt EUV For?

Realistically, this car suits:

  • Urban and suburban commuters who drive less than 200 miles per day

  • Small families looking for a second car

  • Anyone with a garage or driveway for overnight Level 2 charging

It is not the best choice for someone who regularly takes 500-mile road trips or relies solely on public fast chargers. For that, you want a car with 150+ kW DC charging.

How It Fits Inside Chevrolet’s EV Lineup

Chevrolet currently offers several EVs. The Bolt EUV sits:

  • Above the discontinued Bolt EV hatchback (shorter wheelbase, less rear legroom)

  • Below the Equinox EV (larger, faster charging, more expensive)

Main Competitors

At the same price and size, the Bolt EUV goes up against:

ModelKey difference
Hyundai Kona ElectricSlightly faster 100 kW DC charging, 258-mile range
Nissan Leaf SV PlusSimilar range, older CHAdeMO plug, often cheaper after incentives

Direct Comparison: Bolt EUV vs. Hyundai Kona Electric

If you’re comparing specs and price, the closest rival is the Hyundai Kona Electric SE:

  • Battery: 64.8 kWh (Kona) vs. 65 kWh (Bolt)

  • EPA range: 258 miles (Kona) vs. 247–252 miles (Bolt)

  • DC fast charging: 100 kW (Kona) vs. 55 kW (Bolt)

  • Starting price: Within 1,000–2,000 after incentives

The Kona charges faster. The Bolt EUV is often cheaper and offers Super Cruise. Both are good commuter EVs. Neither is a road-trip champion.

Bottom line: The Chevrolet Bolt EUV makes sense if you want a low-cost, honest electric car for daily driving and have a place to plug in overnight. Just don’t expect it to compete with modern 800V EVs at a fast charger.
