Pope Francis Unveils His New Electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class Popemobile
Pope Francis has received a unique new ride: a fully electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, custom-built exclusively for his official duties. This bespoke Popemobile, based on the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G 580 EQ), was presented to the Pope by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius alongside a dedicated team from Graz, Sindelfingen, and Rome.
A Modern, Electric Take on the Popemobile
This new Popemobile marks a major shift from previous models. Instead of the traditional combustion engine setup, it features a quad-motor electric drivetrain specifically tuned for the slow, ceremonial speeds typical of papal processions.
The result: smooth, quiet, and emissions-free travel within Vatican City and during public appearances—perfectly aligning with Pope Francis’ commitment to environmental stewardship.
Interior Built for Comfort, Visibility, and Ceremony
Inside, the electric G-Class has been heavily re-engineered:
- The standard rear bench has been replaced with a centrally positioned, height-adjustable single seat for the Pope.
- This special seat can swivel, allowing him to easily face crowds from any angle.
- Two additional single seats sit behind the papal seat for accompanying clergy or security personnel.
These updates ensure greater visibility and flexibility during processions and blessings.
Exterior Features Custom-Made for Papal Duties
The exterior of the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class Popemobile also features extensive modifications:
- The roof has been removed from the B-pillar back to create an open-air viewing area.
- A removable hardtop can be added for weather protection.
- The left rear door has been deleted, while the right rear door’s hinges were relocated for better ingress and egress.
- The vehicle sports a classic pearl white finish, echoing Popemobile tradition.
This combination of visibility, safety, and elegance ensures that the Pope can greet crowds with ease.
A Continued Partnership Between Mercedes-Benz and the Vatican
Mercedes-Benz has a long history of providing vehicles for the Vatican. The partnership began in 1930 when Pope Pius XI received a Nürburg 460 Pullman Sedan.
For over 45 years, various Mercedes-Benz G-Class models have served as Popemobiles—making the shift to an electric version a natural evolution.
Debut Set for the 2025 Jubilee
The new electric Popemobile will make its official public debut at the 2025 Jubilee, a major global event expected to attract millions of pilgrims to Rome.
Its introduction highlights both the Vatican’s move toward sustainability and Mercedes-Benz’s growing EV leadership, especially with the launch of the electric G-Class lineup.
