The Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S are both three-row all-electric SUVs, but they reflect genuinely different ideas about what a large electric family vehicle should be. The Model X is Tesla’s first SUV, now closing in on a decade old but still kept current through engineering updates and over-the-air software changes, offering seating for five, six, or seven passengers and a choice between a dual-motor and a tri-motor Plaid variant. It targets buyers who want proven range, access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, and a vehicle with a long track record in the EV space. The Rivian R1S is a three-row electric SUV built with a clear adventure-oriented identity, offering gut-dropping acceleration, genuine off-road capability, and on-road comfort in a package that’s unlike anything else in the segment. It attracts buyers who want capability that extends well beyond the school run — camping trips, trail driving, and towing are core to the ownership experience.

The Model X‘s estimated range runs between 314 miles for the Plaid and 329 miles for the standard dual-motor version, which keeps it competitive in the segment without leading it. The R1S spans a wider range of estimates depending on battery pack and configuration, from 258 miles in the base Dual Standard to 410 miles in the Dual Max — giving buyers who spec up a meaningful range advantage. On charging, both vehicles use the NACS standard, giving access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. The Model X can go from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes using a 250kW Tesla Supercharger, adding approximately 100 miles in 14.5 minutes. The R1S supports DC fast charging at up to 200kW currently, with Rivian estimating 140 miles of range in 20 minutes at its proprietary Adventure Network chargers, and a 300kW charge rate promised in the future. The Model X benefits from the wider and more reliable Supercharger footprint, while Rivian’s network is still maturing.
The Model X starts at approximately $84,990 including destination in dual-motor form, with the Plaid pushing well above that. The R1S starts at $75,900 for the Dual Standard with the base battery pack, rising to $82,900 for the Large battery, $89,900 for the Max battery, and $105,900 for the Tri-Motor — giving it a lower entry point but a wide spread depending on how it’s configured. Both vehicles are sold directly in the US, though Tesla’s service and delivery network is considerably more established. Rivian builds the R1S in Normal, Illinois, and its service footprint continues to expand. This comparison is most useful for buyers deciding between a long-established, software-mature EV platform with a dominant charging network, and a newer alternative that prioritises off-road credentials, off-grid capability, and a wider battery pack range.
Beyond the Model X, Tesla’s current lineup includes the Model Y, Model 3, Model S, Cybertruck, and the upcoming smaller models. The Model X’s segment rivals include the BMW iX, Cadillac Vistiq, Lucid Gravity, Mercedes-EQ EQS SUV, and the Rivian R1S itself. On the Rivian side, the lineup currently consists of the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck, with the more accessible R2 SUV in development. The R1S’s closest electric rivals in the three-row space include the Kia EV9 and the Lucid Gravity, though neither matches the R1S’s off-road capability or powertrain breadth. For buyers who want a performance-focused alternative without the adventure packaging, the Tesla Model X Plaid and Lucid Gravity both occupy relevant territory.
Tesla Model X — Access to Tesla’s Supercharger network — now the largest fast-charging infrastructure in North America — remains a practical advantage that competitors are only beginning to match through NACS adapters. The Plaid variant’s tri-motor setup delivers 1,020 horsepower and a 0–60 time of 2.5 seconds, making it one of the quickest large SUVs available regardless of powertrain type. Over-the-air updates and a decade of software refinement mean the Model X is one of the more mature EV platforms on sale today. On the downside, owner reviews frequently cite reliability concerns, including sensor failures and battery issues, alongside criticism of Tesla’s customer service responsiveness. Interior materials have also drawn consistent criticism for not matching the premium feel expected at this price point.
Rivian R1S — The IIHS awarded the 2025 R1S its Top Safety Pick+ designation with top scores across all completed tests — a meaningful safety credential the Model X does not hold. The R1S’s battery pack lineup, particularly the Max configuration, delivers up to 410 miles of estimated range — among the longest of any electric SUV currently available. The R1S’s off-road capability, towing rating of 7,700 lbs, and adventure-focused features give it a practical versatility that purpose-built luxury EVs don’t offer. Against that, the R1S lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which remains a notable omission at this price level for buyers who rely on smartphone integration. Rivian’s DC fast-charging speed is currently capped at 200kW — functional but trailing some rivals who have already moved to higher-voltage architectures.
QUICK VERDICT
Choose the Tesla Model X if Supercharger network access, a proven long-range EV platform, and optional tri-motor performance are your primary considerations — and you’re willing to accept some inconsistency in interior quality and service experience.
Choose the Rivian R1S if off-road capability, a top safety rating, the longest available range in Max battery spec, and a more considered interior matter more than brand maturity or fast-charging network depth.
