Let’s get the name right first: it’s the Volkswagen e-Transporter Kombi. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles makes it, and it sits at the entry-to-mid level of VW’s electric van lineup. Think of it as the passenger-carrying sibling to the standard e-Transporter cargo van.
Body type? It’s a panel-van-based minibus. Drivetrain? Front-wheel drive (FWD) with a single electric motor up front.
Here’s what makes it notable — and this isn’t marketing hype, just fact: the e-Transporter Kombi is a rebadged Ford E-Transit Custom. It’s the result of the Volkswagen-Ford global alliance. That means it’s the first time a mainstream VW van has shared a full electric platform with a direct competitor’s model.
No spin. Just engineering collaboration.
The e-Transporter Kombi comes with one battery option: a usable 64 kWh pack (gross is 74 kWh).
Official range (WLTP): about 236 miles (380 km).
That’s the WLTP cycle — the EPA cycle doesn’t apply because VW doesn’t sell this model in North America.
Charging specs:
AC home/work charging: 11 kW standard (22 kW optional)
DC fast charging peak: 130 kW
10–80% time: approximately 37 minutes
Now for the unconfirmed part — because transparency matters. Volkswagen hasn’t officially confirmed whether the 130 kW peak is sustained or just a brief maximum. These figures come from preview materials and leaks in 2024. Also unconfirmed: bidirectional charging (vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid). Early specs say no, but later model years could change that.
Bottom line: range is solid for urban fleets, charging is competitive with the Ford version, but wait for final specs if V2H matters to you.
The e-Transporter Kombi starts at roughly £52,500 (excl. VAT) in the UK. That’s the base trim. In mainland Europe (Germany, for example), you’re looking at €58,000 to €65,000 depending on options.
No US pricing — this van isn’t sold there.
Let’s be honest: this is not a family minivan for school runs in the way a gas-powered Multivan might be. The e-Transporter Kombi realistically suits:
Fleet operators running passenger services (ride-share, hotel shuttles, airport transfers)
Small businesses that carry both people and light gear
Commercial users with predictable urban or regional routes
Private buyers? Only if you need six seats and electric operation for work. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
Think of the e-Transporter Kombi as the middle child:
Below: e-Caddy (smaller, car-derived electric MPV)
Above: ID. Buzz Cargo (purpose-built electric van, rear-wheel drive)
Two direct competitors to watch:
Ford E-Transit Custom (Titanium passenger version) – almost identical under the skin
Renault Trafic E-Tech Electric (passenger variant) – slightly less range but often cheaper
If you’re comparing electric passenger vans, don’t let the Volkswagen badge fool you. This is a Ford underneath. That’s not bad — the E-Transit Custom is a solid vehicle. Just know what you’re paying extra for.
