Volvo has officially renamed its popular XC40 Recharge to the Volvo EX40 for the 2025 model year, marking a new step in the brand’s shift toward an all-electric lineup. The refreshed Volvo EX40 not only gets a new name but also a larger battery, improved range, and a more accessible price.
Volvo EX40: A Clearer Naming Strategy
To simplify its lineup, Volvo is now reserving the XC40 name for mild-hybrid models, while the T8 badge will denote plug-in hybrids. The all-electric version will exclusively carry the EX40 name. Similarly, the coupe-like C40 Recharge will be rebranded as the EC40 for the 2026 model year, aligning with Volvo’s consistent electric naming structure seen in the EX30 and EX90.
Enhanced Performance and Range
The 2025 Volvo EX40 features a larger 82 kWh battery pack in its dual-motor configuration—up from the previous 78 kWh unit. This upgrade boosts range and efficiency across all variants.
- Single Motor EX40: EPA-estimated 296 miles
- Dual Motor EX40: EPA-estimated 260 miles
Charging speeds have also improved, with single-motor models now supporting up to 205 kW DC fast charging, compared to 200 kW in the previous version.
Meanwhile, the upcoming EC40 (formerly C40 Recharge) will offer slightly higher ranges, at 298 miles (single motor) and 268 miles (dual motor), according to the EPA.

Pricing and Availability
Despite the upgrades, the 2025 Volvo EX40 is more affordable than before. The lineup starts at $52,500 for the Single Motor variant and $60,750 for the Dual Motor version (excluding destination fees). That’s a price reduction of $1,245 and $1,095, respectively, compared to the outgoing models.
With its refined range, faster charging, and strategic naming update, the Volvo EX40 is set to strengthen Volvo’s position in the premium electric SUV market—offering a smarter, cleaner, and more affordable option for EV buyers.
