There is still work to be done on Rivian’s bigger SUVs, the R1T and Rivian R1S, even though the company is getting ready to launch its smaller SUV, the R2, next month. The starting price for both cars just went down a little because they now come with a new battery choice.

There are two new entry-level options for both the Rivian R1S and the R1T. They are called Standard and Standard+. The Standard trim has a smaller 106-kWhNew entry-level Rivian R1S & R1T unveiled battery pack that Rivian says can give it a range of 270 miles on a single charge. This battery is only available with the twin-motor 533 hp engine, and the time it takes to go from 0 to 60 mph has not changed. It is still 4.5 seconds.

Both the 533 hp and 665 hp Performance powertrains can be added to the Standard+ trim. When put on the usual 21-inch wheels with road tires, the 121 kWh battery pack can give you a range of up to 315 miles. If you choose 22-inch wheels, the range drops to 300 miles. Interestingly, you can only get 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires with the 655-hp engine, which means the range drops to 280 miles.

With the new battery choices, the R1T and Rivian R1S now come in 4 different versions, in addition to the Large trim with a 135 kWh battery and the Max option with a 149 kWh battery. The government tax credit for electric vehicles has been increased to $3,750 for both the Rivian R1S and the R1T Standard. This makes them the least expensive Rivians to date..

Model Battery Power Range Price
R1T Standard 106 kWh 533 hp 270 miles $69,900
R1T Standard+ 121 kWh 533 hp 315 miles $73,000
R1T Standard+ Performance 121 kWh 665 hp 315 miles $78,000
R1S Standard 106 kWh 533 hp 270 miles $74,900
R1S Standard+ 121 kWh 533 hp 315 miles $78,000
R1S Standard+ Perfromance 121 kWh 665 hp 315 miles $83,000

Rivian’s short past starts over on March 7. It will cost a lot less when the company brings its smaller SUV to the North American market. This is just the beginning; more cars will be built on the new base after the R2. A while ago, the company said that the R2 would start at around $40,000. However, as we’ve seen many times before, price claims don’t always hold up.
