Volkswagen VW ID.7 VIZZION Sale begins at €29,800 in China.

On December 15, FAW-Volkswagen released the ID.7 VIZZION to the Chinese market. This new newcomer in the EV field claims to be a “game-changer” for an apparently competitive RMB 227,777 (about €29,800), but doubt hangs in the air like the faint fragrance of burnt rubber.

The ID.7 VIZZION, a cooperation between FAW-VW and SAIC-VW, features three versions, each competing for attention in a market crowded with subtle stylistic distinctions. The 5-door liftback body features integrated hidden door handles and is visually consistent with the VW ID family design language. Aside from aesthetics, the specifications – 4,956 mm in length, 1,862 mm in width, and 1,537 mm in height – appear to be standard. These dimensions pit the new ID.7 VIZZION against the Tesla Model S and Nio ET7.

The SkyView glass roof, which promises to exclude 99% of UV rays and 83% of heat, is a noteworthy feature. It remains to be seen whether this is a game changer or just another gimmick, but it is an intriguing element regardless.

The ID.7 VIZZION is powered by an 84.8kWh liquid-cooled NMC battery (the same battery used as the ID.7 AWD in Europe), and it is available with single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor four-wheel drive. The range numbers of 642 km for the two-wheel drive and 570 km for the four-wheel drive are amazing, but excuse us if we scoff at these too optimistic claims. These figures are based on the CLTC cycle, which is the most optimistic estimate in the world. The pre-sale model is a single-motor rear-wheel drive model with a peak power of 150 kW and a peak torque of 310 Nm.

Of course, safety is paramount. The usage of 32% hot-formed steel and enhanced torsional stiffness of the chassis seem promising, but we’re curious how these specifications translate to real-world safety. The “sandwich” door sill structure, EmergencyAssist 3.0, AEB automated emergency braking system, and a 360-degree panoramic view are all included, as is PDC parking assistance.

The ID.7 VIZZION features a 15-inch 2K floating screen and an AR HUD navigation system on the inside. The vehicle is powered by the next-generation automobile system ID OS 2.0, which includes iFlytek voice technology for an ostensibly enhanced user experience. Because traditional air-conditioning systems were far too predictable, hidden air-conditioning vents vary air direction and volume based on light changes. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system sounds fantastic.

The ID.7 VIZZION enters a market crowded with competitive competitors such as the Nio ET7, XPeng P7, and BYD Han. There’s the brand-new Zeekr 007 and its larger sibling, the Zeekr 001. While the initial price appears to be appealing, it is not the only consideration.

As Volkswagen’s pure electric vehicles struggle to gain a significant share of the Chinese EV market, the ID.7 VIZZION emerges as the model bearing the brand’s fate. It tries to change the tides with competitive pricing and a long list of features. Will it be successful, or will it fade into the murky background of electronic fantasies?
