BYD just launched an electric sedan that claims more than 1,000 km of range and costs about US$35,000 (roughly C$48,000–49,000). It’s called the Great Han, or Da Han in China, and for now you can only buy it there. The top version makes up to 764 hp, and BYD says it can charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes.

Western automakers are still working out how to make EVs cheaper. BYD keeps releasing new ones. The Great Han is the first full-size flagship sedan in its Dynasty lineup.

How far can it go?

The 1,008 km figure comes from China’s CLTC test cycle, which is generous. BYD’s own conversion is about 816–820 km on the stricter WLTP cycle, and a Canadian winter would cut it more. Even the lower number beats most EVs on sale.

Every version has a 102.3 kWh second-generation Blade battery. There are three trims:

  • RWD Premium: one 370 kW motor (496 hp), 1,008 km CLTC, 235,900 yuan (about US$35,200)
  • RWD Flagship: same powertrain with more equipment, 249,900 yuan (about US$37,300)
  • AWD Flagship: a 200 kW front motor lifts the total to 570 kW (764 hp), range falls to 880 km CLTC, 275,900 yuan (about US$41,200)

Charging

BYD claims 10–70% in about five minutes and 10–97% in about nine. Those times need its 1,500 kW Flash Charging stations. BYD had 4,239 in China as of March 2026, and it hasn’t said when they’ll reach Canada.

Tech and comfort

A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor feeds BYD’s God’s Eye B driver assistance, which works on highways and city streets. The car also has dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering and a 31-speaker Devialet sound system. The front “zero-gravity” seats have heating, ventilation and massage.

Size

The Great Han is 5,256 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,510 mm tall, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. It’s aimed at the same buyers as the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air.

Is the Great Han coming to Canada?

BYD hasn’t announced it. Canada now allows up to 49,000 Chinese-built EVs a year at a 6.1% tariff, and BYD plans to enter the market, though some launches are reportedly slipping to 2027. Over 1,000 km per charge would suit Canadian distances. Expect a higher price here than in China, and treat the range as a best case.
