PROS
- Very good value: big 82.5 kWh battery and strong standard equipment at a low price
- Wide choice from a relaxed single-motor car to a 3.8 s all-wheel-drive car
- Safe and long-lasting: 5-star Euro NCAP, LFP Blade battery and a long warranty
CONS
- Charging is capped at 150 kW, which is slower than some rivals
- Firm ride on rough roads, and the regen controls are fiddly
The BYD Seal Performance is the dual-motor AWD trim of BYD’s electric sedan, which is about 4,800 mm long. Australia calls it the Performance. In the UK, where the Seal is BYD’s flagship, the same car is the Excellence. It sits in the mid-to-upper-mid price band. The reason to pick it over the RWD Seal is output: 390 kW (530 hp) and 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
The battery is an LFP Blade pack, 84.0 kWh nominal and 82.5 kWh usable. WLTP range is 520 km (323 miles), where the RWD gets up to 570 km. EV Database puts real-world range at 275 miles. DC charging peaks at 150 kW, and 10–80% takes about 37 minutes, though sources range from 36 to 38. Zecar logged an average of around 100 kW over a full session. AC is 11 kW in UK and EU spec, so 0–100% takes about 9 hours. Zecar lists 7 kW single-phase for Australia, so the AC figure depends on where you buy it.
UK pricing is £48,730 on the road for the AWD Excellence, and that includes the £2,500 plug-in car grant. In Australia the Performance is A$61,990 and is exempt from fringe benefits tax. I couldn’t verify China launch pricing. Reviewers mostly pitch it at company-car drivers, and it also fits anyone who wants a quick sedan with a big LFP battery. Within BYD it sits above the Atto 3 and Dolphin and alongside the Sealion 7, which starts at £51,990 in UK AWD form. Outside the brand, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i4 are the usual rivals. The closest match is the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which one undated table lists at 75 kWh usable, 250 kW DC and 32 minutes for 10–80%. The Seal AWD in the same table has 82.6 kWh, 150 kW and 38 minutes. I didn’t find a Model 3 Performance price, so check both figures before publishing.
